‘Approved’ – Fabrizio Romano delivers Leeds United transfer update as £35m star given green light…
Leeds are in discussions to acquire “one of the best players in the world,” who is considered superior to Paixao – a viewpoint.
How Leeds can secure a winger who surpasses Igor Paixao.
Following an unbeaten run in five out of six pre-season matches, a cautious optimism is emerging at Leeds United as they approach the 2026/27 season.
Daniel Farke is keen to improve upon last season’s 14th-place finish in the Premier League, and it is evident that the 49ers are supporting him in this endeavor.
With the arrivals of Tarik Muharemovic, James Trafford, and Harry Wilson for a total of £79m, key positions within the Whites’ senior squad have been bolstered.
However, for the German manager to enhance his chances of a top-half finish, he urgently requires additional reinforcements in one specific area of his senior team.
Reasons Leeds require more attacking options this summer.
Even though striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored 14 goals in the Premier League last season, Leeds need more players to alleviate some of the pressure on their star forward.
The acquisition of Wilson will undoubtedly enhance the quality of Farke’s squad, but potential departures could leave the Whites somewhat thin in attacking positions as they head into the 2026/27 season.
Joe Gelhardt has recently made a £6.5m transfer to Hull City, while players like Largie Ramazani, Wilfried Gnonto, and Joel Piroe seem to be nearing exits from Elland Road.
Consequently, Dan James, Lukas Nmecha, and Noah Okafor are left as available options, with the manager still viewing Brenden Aaronson as a regular starter in his 3-4-2-1 formation.
The latter has faced criticism during pre-season, leading many fans to question his capability to be a pivotal player throughout the 2026/27 season.
With the season opener just days away, it appears unlikely that the Whites will enhance their attacking lineup before heading south to face Nottingham Forest.
However, it is essential for Farke and his team to finalize deals before the transfer window closes, as several talents have recently come to their attention.
How Leeds can acquire a more significant talent than Paixao
For the second consecutive year, Leeds have once again prioritized attacker Igor Paixao on their transfer list to enhance their offensive lineup.
The Brazilian, who transferred to Marseille last summer, may be on the move again as the French club seeks to generate funds and alleviate their financial challenges.
A transfer fee around £35m has been suggested for the 26-year-old forward, but he is not the only player currently being considered at Elland Road.
AC Milan winger Rafael Leão has resurfaced on their radar, with Football Insider reporting the latest developments in the Whites’ pursuit of the skilled player.
They assert that the 27-year-old has been presented to Farke’s squad in recent weeks, leading to discussions between the Whites and the player’s agents.
Their report also indicates that Manchester United may be involved in potential negotiations, while clubs in Saudi Arabia and Turkey continue to keep an eye on the Portuguese star’s situation.
Securing a deal could be challenging due to Leao’s substantial salary, but there is no doubt that the Whites would be acquiring a player with significant credentials in the attacking sector.
His statistics from last season in Serie A underscore his prowess in offensive situations and illustrate why he stands out compared to fellow transfer target, Paixao.
The Portuguese international completed nearly double the number of crosses than the Brazilian per 90 minutes, with a 44% success rate that places him above 85% of forwards in Europe.
Leao also succeeded in more of his dribbling attempts than the Marseille player, which, like his crossing accuracy, ranks him in the top 15% of players in his position across the continent.
These statistics, along with his impressive goal contribution in fewer matches, highlight his exceptional performance and support Luka Modric’s assertion that he is “one of the best players in the world.”
A significant part of his effectiveness in attacking positions stems from his remarkable skill in locating teammates in threatening positions, as evidenced by his big chance creation numbers.
Leao’s average of 0.5 big chances per 90 minutes not only surpasses that of Paixao but also exceeds the figures of 91% of other wingers in Europe’s top five leagues.
It remains uncertain how much a transfer would cost Farke’s team or whether he would be inclined to move to Elland Road, yet this connection has sparked considerable enthusiasm among the fanbase.
His established success in offensive roles makes him an ideal acquisition for the Whites during this transfer window and could enable him to play a significant part in assisting the club in securing a top-half finish.
