‘Approved’ – Fabrizio Romano provides an update on Newcastle United’s transfer as a £50m star receives the go-ahead.

Newcastle United transfers: Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez is on the radar of Newcastle as they seek to strengthen their midfield.

Following the acquisition of Amar Dedic from Benfica earlier this week, Newcastle United’s search for a midfielder is intensifying.

With the full-back position now secured, the focus has shifted to midfield as a top priority in the closing weeks of the transfer window. This summer, the Magpies have seen the departure of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes from their midfield.

Thus far, the only new midfield additions to the club have been 18-year-old Sean Steur and 20-year-old Aladji Bamba. The team is now looking to bring in a more seasoned player to enhance Matthias Jaissle’s squad in the midfield area.

A new name that has surfaced this week is Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez. The 24-year-old has faced challenges in securing regular starting positions since his £50million transfer from Porto in January 2025.

Gonzalez made his full Premier League debut in a 4-0 victory against Newcastle the following month.

He was a consistent presence in the lineup during the first half of the 2025/26 season but started only two of Manchester City’s last 17 league games. He is now potentially available for transfer this summer.

The news initially emerged from The Athletic on Tuesday night and has since been highlighted by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who shared his insights on the matter.

“We also know now that Nico Gonzalez could leave the club,” Romano stated on YouTube. “Nico has never been considered untouchable at Manchester City. Currently, the deal is not finalized; it is merely in negotiation, but Newcastle sees this as a genuine and realistic opportunity.

“For Manchester City, the player has never been deemed untouchable, as Nico has always been viewed as a solid backup rather than a regular starter, despite the significant investment made in January 2025 for Nico Gonzalez from Porto.

They believed he could become a regular starter, but that did not happen. Therefore, if a suitable offer arises, Newcastle may consider giving him an opportunity, as the transfer has already received approval from coach Matthias Jaissle.

Consequently, Newcastle is looking to include Nico Gonzalez in their roster following the recent official signing of Dedic a few days ago.
