Newcastle United aims to make Bruno Guimaraes their highest-paid player by offering him a record-breaking £40 million contract, as reported by the Sun.

The Brazilian midfielder, who serves as the captain of Newcastle, is attracting interest from Arsenal. However, manager Eddie Howe is determined to retain him at St James’ Park.

Currently, Guimaraes earns £160,000 weekly and has two years left on his existing contract.

At 28 years old, he is already Newcastle’s top earner, and the club is prepared to present him with an enhanced four-year deal this summer, which would pay him £200,000 per week.

This contract would mark the largest in the club’s history, culminating in £40 million in wages by the end of the term.

Arsenal and Manchester United are poised to offer Guimaraes more if he shows any inclination to leave Newcastle.

The Gunners have previously attempted to submit a £55 million bid for him, but the Magpies have firmly stated he is not for sale.

Arsenal is planning a second bid, yet Newcastle remains resolute that their captain is off the market at any price.

Guimaraes is valued at approximately £80 million, and it remains uncertain whether such an offer could entice the Tyneside club.

Additionally, Sandro Tonali is another midfielder attracting interest, with Tottenham Hotspur keen on acquiring him.

The Magpies are demanding £100 million for the Italian and are unlikely to consider losing both him and Guimaraes in the same transfer window.

Currently, neither player is seeking to leave the club, and Newcastle hopes this situation persists throughout the transfer window.

Last summer, the Toons had to sell Alexander Isak after he expressed a desire to depart.

Other players may also be tempted to follow suit if potential suitors make serious offers in the upcoming weeks.
