Liverpool’s forgotten right-back could finally get chance to impress again…

Liverpool’s overlooked right-back may finally have the opportunity to shine once more.

Liverpool is poised to offer a long-awaited chance to Calvin Ramsay as we face Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup this Wednesday, a moment that has been over 1,000 days in the making.

Ramsay’s journey back to first-team action at Liverpool.

With Jeremie Frimpong out due to injury and Conor Bradley’s fitness needing careful management, Arne Slot finds himself with limited options at right-back for this League Cup match.

Joe Gomez is anticipated to play centrally, particularly in light of Giovanni Leoni’s absence, which means our Scottish defender could finally return to senior action for the first time since the 0–0 draw with Derby County in November 2022.

Ramsay, now donning No.47 after his previous No.22 was given to Hugo Ekitike, has faced a challenging series of injuries and loan difficulties since joining us from Aberdeen in June 2022.

Loan stints with Preston North End, Bolton Wanderers, Wigan Athletic, and Kilmarnock yielded limited playing time, but the 22-year-old has worked diligently to regain his confidence.

His player profile on Liverpoolfc.com still labels him as an “attack-minded right-back,” and his latest performance for the U21s indicates that his sharpness is returning.

Building momentum from a strong U21 Merseyside derby performance.

In Sunday’s mini-Merseyside derby, Ramsay netted a goal in a 4–1 victory for Liverpool U21s against Everton, showcasing flashes of the talent that once positioned him as one of Scotland’s leading prospects.

As noted by Liverpoolfc.com, “Ramsay restored their lead and further Figueroa efforts either side of the break provided them with a cushion they thoroughly deserved.”

This performance could not have come at a more opportune moment.

Considering our current defensive vulnerabilities, having conceded two or more goals in nine of our last ten league matches, Slot might be inclined to give the 22-year-old an opportunity to make an impression at the senior level.

Ramsay’s initial career at Liverpool showed great potential, highlighted by a strong full debut in the Carabao Cup against Derby and a brief appearance in the Champions League against Napoli.

Returning to that level would represent a significant achievement in his path from overcoming injuries to finding redemption.

If our head coach seeks determination and ambition in this cup match, there are few players in our team with more at stake than the young Scot.

While this match may not determine the course of our season, for Ramsay, it has the potential to transform his career at Liverpool.
