UEFA addresses the controversial decision regarding Liverpool’s match against Galatasaray, expressing the Reds’ disappointment.

Liverpool was denied a penalty in the final moments of their Champions League match against Galatasaray, prompting UEFA to clarify why Ibrahima Konate was not awarded a penalty kick during the game’s closing stages.

UEFA provided an explanation for the lack of a penalty for Ibrahima Konate during Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray.

The Reds saw a potential opportunity when the French defender was fouled in the penalty area late in the match on Tuesday night.

After conceding a penalty that Victor Osimhen converted successfully, Liverpool was pushing for an equalizer. A corner kick was taken, and Konate attempted a volley at goal, but Wilfried Singo intervened.

Initially, referee Clement Turpin signaled for a penalty but was advised to review the incident on the monitor, leading him to reverse his decision.

UEFA later provided clarification on the reasoning behind this choice.

In a statement on the UEFA website, they noted: “Decision overturned: no penalty. Penalty cancelled – no foul.

Galatasaray’s player, No90 (Singo), played the ball fairly before the contact occurred.”

A contentious penalty was awarded to Galatasaray when Dominik Szoboszlai was ruled to have fouled Baris Yilmaz in his own penalty area.

Although the midfielder did not make contact with the 25-year-old’s feet, he was considered to have made contact with a trailing arm.

Since the incident was not reviewed by VAR and the referee’s ruling remained unchanged, there was no commentary from VAR on the situation.

After the match, Reds manager Arne Slot voiced his disappointment.

He stated: “Once again, I am disappointed. In my view, this performance was different both on and off the ball compared to our game against Crystal Palace.

In the first half, we played quite well and had a significant opportunity to take the lead. It is challenging to draw comparisons to previous situations.

“At times, we find ourselves outsmarted in scenarios like this, and I cannot hold Dominik Szoboszlai accountable for the circumstances. They transform a 20 percent penalty into a 100 percent penalty, which is quite clever on their part.

“We are not too far [from the level we displayed last season]. This is occasionally what the schedule entails – facing Galatasaray is no easy task. Next, we have Chelsea away, which will be a challenging match.

“The margins were narrow last season, and they remain so. For the second consecutive time, we find ourselves on the unfavorable side.

“I observed many aspects in the first half, but the second half was significantly less engaging.

“I don’t believe there was much playing time in the second half. Their striker was on the ground four or five times. It was challenging to gain momentum in the match.”
