“The clubs have reached an agreement” – Arne Slot provides a transfer update ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League match against Bournemouth.

Arne Slot provides a transfer update ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League match against Bournemouth.

Arne Slot has announced that Liverpool has finalized a deal with Parma for defender Giovanni Leoni prior to Liverpool’s Premier League match against Bournemouth.

The Reds are set to pay £26 million ($35m) for the Italian teenage talent as the Dutch manager is keen to integrate him into the first team immediately.

Leoni has received approval to travel to Merseyside to finalize personal terms and undergo a medical examination, which is anticipated to start on Thursday.

This agreement, which includes performance-related bonuses, will push Liverpool’s remarkable summer transfer spending past the £300 million threshold, marking the third-highest single-window expenditure in Premier League history. Chelsea currently holds the record with £434.5m spent in the 2023/24 season.

Reports indicate that there will be no possibility of Leoni being sent out on loan. Instead, the strategy is to incorporate him into the squad right away as the Reds gear up for their Premier League title defense.

With only Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté fully fit ahead of Friday’s match against Bournemouth, and Joe Gomez just returning from an Achilles injury, the addition of a new defensive player is well-timed.

In a statement to the media, Slot confirmed: “The clubs have reached an agreement, but he hasn’t signed with us yet. Once he signs, I can provide more details.”

Leoni’s ascent has been rapid. Just last summer, he joined Parma and quickly became a first-team regular, making 17 appearances, 14 of which were as a starter, in Italy’s top division.

Bound by a long-term contract until 2029, the young player was not anticipated to depart so soon, but Liverpool’s enticing offer was too appealing for Parma to refuse.

Although Leoni’s documentation and medical assessments are yet to be finalized, Liverpool’s focus now turns to their upcoming match against Bournemouth at Anfield on Friday evening.

The timing of his arrival may provide Slot with an additional option on the bench, but the Dutchman is cautious about hurrying the teenager before he has acclimated.
