Sunderland aims for FIVE additional signings as transfer expenditures are set to persist.

The Black Cats are making significant preparations for their return to the Premier League.

Sunderland’s flurry of transfer activities indicates their serious intentions for the upcoming Premier League season.

The Black Cats have already invested £50m in summer signings, and it appears the club’s finances will be further impacted, with another £37m reportedly earmarked to bring in midfielder Noah Sadiki and Chelsea goalkeeper Djorde Petrovic to the ever-growing Stadium of Light roster.

It is not uncommon for promoted teams to spend such substantial amounts, as seen with Nottingham Forest, which boldly added 22 new players to their squad the summer following their promotion in 2022.

This is a strategy clubs feel compelled to adopt to maintain their status among the elite in the sport.

The additional £27m from Jobe Bellingham’s transfer to Borussia Dortmund has certainly been effectively utilized, along with Tommy Watson’s departure for a more modest £10m.

Ligue 1 appears to be Sunderland’s preferred market this summer, with reports suggesting the potential addition of Lyon star Georges Mikautadze, alongside Toulouse defender and England U21 standout, Charlie Cresswell, who has caught the attention of those on Wearside following an impressive U21 Euros tournament with Lee Carsley’s England.

Sunderland must remain focused on providing opportunities for some young talents, even as they spend significantly, with Africa Foot now suggesting that Regis Le Bris and the club’s management are in advanced discussions to secure promising Lorient starlet Arthur Avom Ebong for just £4m.

Africa Foot reports that Liverpool, Chelsea, West Ham United, and AFC Bournemouth have all shown interest in the 20-year-old player.

However, Sunderland may soon secure his sought-after services with a four-year contract, as Le Bris is already acquainted with the Cameroonian talent, having previously collaborated with him at Lorient.

Even if Sunderland ultimately does not succeed in acquiring Cresswell, they could still land a player equally capable of making a significant impact in the English league by signing Lorient’s No 67 soon, who has just experienced a breakout season in French football.

While Cresswell would require a hefty £18m investment from the Black Cats, Ebong could join Le Bris’ squad for a mere £4m, despite having had a similarly impressive season in French football from a central midfield position.
