Newcastle is reportedly in discussions to pursue a Liverpool player for a revenge mission after missing out on Victor Munoz.

Following their unsuccessful attempt to sign Victor Munoz, Newcastle has shifted its focus to a star from Liverpool.

Andoni Iraola made his first signing as Liverpool’s manager by securing Munoz for £34.6 million, right from under Newcastle’s noses, while the player is currently participating in the World Cup with Spain.

At just 22 years old, Munoz was intended to be Newcastle’s replacement for Anthony Gordon on the left flank of their attack, and he had already set the stage for a transfer to St. James Park until Liverpool stepped in at the last moment.

While Newcastle was negotiating the price, Liverpool swiftly agreed to pay the release clause, allowing Munoz to finalize his move to Anfield shortly thereafter.

This marks the second consecutive summer in which Liverpool has outmaneuvered Newcastle in the transfer market, adding to the frustrations of the Magpies’ supporters.

Last summer, the Reds secured Hugo Ekitike ahead of Newcastle and went even further by acquiring Alexander Isak, which led Newcastle to sign Yoanne Wissa and Nick Woltemade, both of whom have had disappointing performances in their inaugural season.

Now, Newcastle intends to target Liverpool for an alternative to Munoz.

According to Caught Offside, Cody Gakpo has emerged on Eddie Howe’s radar, with the club’s management discussing the Dutch player as a potential replacement for Gordon.

Gakpo’s future has become uncertain following the sacking of Arne Slot, as he managed to score only seven goals in a lackluster season, a year after winning the Premier League title.

Tottenham is also rumored to be interested in the Dutch international, who signed a new long-term contract reportedly worth around £250,000 per week in August 2025.

Additionally, Newcastle has engaged in discussions with Arsenal regarding Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard to enhance their attacking options.

Meanwhile, Liverpool is focusing on acquiring winger Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig.

The Ivory Coast talent is currently valued at over £100m, with Champions League champions Paris Saint-Germain also showing interest, and the price is likely to increase if the young player continues to excel at the World Cup.

Liverpool is reportedly keen on Koln’s Said El Mala, Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh, and Lille’s Matias Fernandez-Pardo should they fail to secure Diomande.

PSG’s Bradley Barcola might also find himself at Anfield if the French international opts to leave, although Arsenal is anticipated to compete for his acquisition.

Cody Gakpo has commented on the decision to dismiss Arne Slot. During international duty, Gakpo mentioned that none of the Liverpool players anticipated the sacking.

He stated: “It is, of course, unfortunate that the manager has been let go.

“However, I believe the club issued a statement regarding this, providing an explanation.

“Ultimately, I don’t think any of the players saw it coming. But it certainly occurred.

A number of our club players are currently preparing for the World Cup, so we must swiftly set that aside, regardless of how challenging it may be for some.
