Leeds ‘waiting’ to shatter transfer record for ‘dream signing’ as insider rates chances of £40m deal…
Leeds is poised to break its transfer record for a ‘dream signing’ as an insider assesses the likelihood of a £40m deal.
Leeds United’s pursuit of a new goalkeeper is set to intensify in the coming days, following updates from two sources regarding their efforts to acquire James Trafford. Details about the potential cost of the deal, the stiff competition they face, and the player’s perspective on the transfer have all emerged.
The Whites have made a strong start to their summer transfer window. Harry Wilson has officially joined on a free transfer after they outmaneuvered several competitors to secure the Wales international. Additionally, Leeds United is expected to announce the signing of Tarik Muharemovic from Sassuolo for £34m. The Bosnian defender will take over Pascal Struijk’s position on the left side of defense.
Next on Leeds’ agenda, and arguably their most crucial signing of the summer, is the acquisition of a new goalkeeper.
Last season’s first-choice keeper, Karl Darlow, has departed Leeds to ‘pursue an opportunity elsewhere,’ having signed with Manchester United as a free agent. Meanwhile, ongoing uncertainties regarding Lucas Perri’s future have made it clear that bringing in a new goalkeeper is no longer just a need but a ‘must-buy.’
One player the Whites are eager to sign is Trafford, with TEAMtalk exclusively reporting back in February that the England international was already identified as their ideal summer target.
Trafford is keen to leave Manchester City after a frustrating period since his return to the Etihad. After joining in a £27m deal from Burnley last summer, he quickly lost his starting position when City seized the opportunity to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma, which significantly limited Trafford’s playing time.
While City will not obstruct his departure, sources indicate that they will seek a fee in the range of £35m to £40m (approximately €47m, $54m) for his transfer.
Leeds appears to be firmly establishing themselves as frontrunners for his signature, and although the competition is fierce, Graham Smyth from the Yorkshire Evening Post has corroborated our assertions that the 23-year-old is the club’s primary target…
James Trafford is the ideal target for Leeds United – Smyth
Leeds have already been associated with various goalkeeper options this summer, including Carl Rushworth, Zion Suzuki, and more recently, Michele Di Gregorio from Juventus, all of whom are potential signings for Elland Road.
Suzuki, in particular, seems to be a promising acquisition. The Parma goalkeeper demonstrated his remarkable skills during Japan’s journey to the Round of 16 in the World Cup finals, where they were eliminated by Brazil.
However, with a €40m release clause in his contract with the Serie A club, securing his services would not be inexpensive.
If the Whites are prepared to invest such a significant amount in a goalkeeper, there is no doubt about which player they would prioritize for such an expenditure.
In discussing what could potentially set a new transfer record for Leeds, Smyth provided insights on Trafford during his appearance on the Inside Elland Road podcast.
“I believe they [Leeds] are biding their time for Trafford,” he stated.
“I think Trafford’s future will be determined now that the World Cup has concluded.
“Leeds seems to be waiting for the right moment to position themselves favorably and compete with others to secure him.
“It would be a dream signing if they can finalize it.”
Indeed, regarding that ‘competition with others’, sources indicate that Leeds will need to overcome challenges from Newcastle United and Aston Villa for the four-cap England international.
On Tuesday, transfer correspondent Fraser Fletcher reported that Leeds had received positive signals from City regarding a potential sale and had ‘requested to be kept updated’ on the 23-year-old’s future developments.
Reports from the North-East, however, continue to assert that he is also Eddie Howe’s primary target to become the No.1 on Tyneside this summer. Additionally, our sources suggest that Villa will pursue his services if they are compelled to sell Emiliano Martinez, who has been heavily linked with Juventus this summer.
Consequently, Leeds will have to go all out if they wish to secure Trafford.
That being said, after overcoming significant competition for both Wilson and Muharemovic, they will be optimistic about achieving a hat-trick of major transfer successes, potentially their most crucial one yet if they can win the competition for Trafford.
