‘In negotiations’ – England international has already consented to join Newcastle United as a new target arises

Newcastle United transfers: Eddie Howe’s team is aiming to secure two additional goalkeeper signings this summer.

Newcastle United is actively seeking two goalkeepers this summer following the £18 million acquisition of Ewen Jaouen at the beginning of the transfer window.

The Magpies have loaned out Odysseas Vlachodimos for the second consecutive season, released John Ruddy, and opted not to activate the option to make Aaron Ramsdale’s loan from Southampton permanent. This leaves the first-team goalkeeping roster limited to Nick Pope, Jaouen, and Mark Gillespie.

However, with the club open to selling Pope this summer and the goalkeeper drawing interest from other Premier League teams, they are looking for replacements. Newcastle is also aiming to recruit a new third-choice goalkeeper following Ruddy’s departure.

James Trafford has been Newcastle’s primary goalkeeper target since 2024, but for various reasons, the club has been unable to finalize a deal for the England international. The Manchester City goalkeeper had previously agreed to join Newcastle and would be willing to leave the Etihad Stadium this summer due to limited Premier League chances after Gianluigi Donnarumma’s arrival last summer.

The Gazette had earlier reported that Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen was also on Newcastle’s radar but would likely be too costly. Now, another Brighton goalkeeper has been associated with a potential move to Newcastle.

According to Mail Online, Newcastle has included 25-year-old Carl Rushworth in their list of goalkeeper targets and are ‘in negotiations’ regarding a possible transfer. The report further states that talks concerning a move for Trafford are ‘ongoing’.

Despite having his entire professional career tied to Brighton, Rushworth has not yet participated in a competitive match for the club. Instead, he has spent his playing career entirely on loan. Last season, he was with Coventry City, where he played all 46 league matches, contributing to their Championship title victory.

During the 2024/25 season, the goalkeeper made three appearances for Hull City, but before that, he had regular playing time during his loan spells at Swansea City, Lincoln City, Walsall, and Worthing.

Rushworth is now in the final year of his contract with Brighton, and following his successful loan last season, Coventry has shown interest in signing the goalkeeper on a permanent deal.
