Alongside Bergvall: Newcastle open talks to sign £42m midfielder, he’s as exciting as Manzambi…
In conjunction with Bergvall: Newcastle initiates discussions to acquire a £42m midfielder, who is as thrilling as Manzambi – perspective
The focus is on charting a path to revival for Newcastle United in the Premier League next season, following a disappointing campaign last year.
Achieving consistent success on the pitch is always challenging when faced with relentless obstacles in the transfer market. When the Magpies ascended to the pinnacle of English football at the onset of the Howe era, they seemingly opened Pandora’s Box, now doomed to witness all their prime transfer targets fall into rival hands.
Newcastle cannot afford to dwell on their misfortunes and must act swiftly to address any weaknesses in the squad. Although Sean Steur has joined for £23m after Sandro Tonali’s £100m transfer to Tottenham, uncertainty looms over captain Bruno Guimaraes, highlighting the urgent need for another midfielder.
Reasons why Newcastle must secure a midfielder
Guimaraes is a unique talent, the linchpin of a Newcastle team that has risen from the threats of mid-table and relegation struggles to participate in two Champions League campaigns over three seasons, also clinching the Carabao Cup in 2025 by defeating Liverpool at Wembley.
At 28, the world-class Brazilian is clearly eager to compete at the highest level, and Newcastle’s 12th-place finish in the Premier League last year has tested his loyalty to Tyneside, with the captain keen to consider a move to league champions Arsenal. Discussions have occurred as the Gunners attempt to maneuver and secure his transfer.
Finding a replacement was always going to be a challenge, and it has become even more complicated now that Johan Manzambi’s potential transfer to St. James’ Park has fallen through. Aston Villa has swooped in, adding to a long list of frustrations.
The 20-year-old Swiss midfielder made a significant impact at the World Cup this summer, netting three goals and providing two assists in four matches, only two of which were starts.
Nonetheless, his contributions with Freiburg in the Bundesliga were more calculated, though still highly impactful. He achieved an 84% pass completion rate, won an average of 6.6 duels, and made 3.7 defensive contributions per game, prompting talent scout Jacek Kulig to label him as “one of the most thrilling box-crashing midfielders in Europe”.
This player has the potential to become a superstar, a box-to-box midfielder for the ages. Unfortunately, he will be joining Villa this summer, leaving Newcastle and Howe in a difficult position once again.
They need to act swiftly and demonstrate their commitment to regaining their competitive edge in Europe.
Newcastle has initiated discussions for a Manzambi alternative.
A £51m agreement was reached to acquire Manzambi, indicating that PIF has the financial resources to invest in talented midfielders.
This is further evidenced by the news that the Magpies had a bid rejected for Tottenham Hotspur’s Lucas Bergvall, with the north London club turning down an offer of approximately £46m for the 20-year-old.
However, Bergvall is not the only Swedish midfielder Newcastle is pursuing, as Football Transfers has reported that they have begun negotiations to sign Hugo Larsson from Eintracht Frankfurt.
So, what’s the catch? Manchester United is also showing interest in the talented playmaker, whom Frankfurt is hesitant to sell but has reluctantly valued at €50m (£43m). Larsson is eager to explore a move to the Premier League, but neither club has made a formal offer yet.
It’s important to note that by signing the Sweden international, who was left out of Graham Potter’s World Cup squad, Newcastle would be acquiring potential rather than a finished product.
Larsson did not have the strongest 2025/26 season, yet he remains one of the most promising midfield talents available, praised for his “insane running and stamina” by analyst and Como scout Ben Mattinson, who even remarked that he resembles Three Lions superstar Jude Bellingham.
Larsson continues to develop his physicality, yet the comparison to Jude highlights his significant potential. It’s clear why Newcastle is interested in him, as he would add a box-crashing midfielder reminiscent of the impact Manzambi could have had.
Although this represents a risk following a lackluster year, Larsson was affected by his team’s broader struggles, and he demonstrated elite potential the previous season.
Newcastle is undoubtedly focused on enhancing their squad with emerging talent this summer, but if Larsson can regain the form he exhibited during his early Bundesliga days, he might surpass Manzambi and ultimately validate Howe’s vision for the project.
While Manzambi is currently the center of attention, Larsson possesses the qualities of a midfielder with exceptional tactical awareness and vision, capable of influencing play from deeper positions.
In contrast, Manzambi is more physical and straightforward in his approach. Although Larsson has similar skills, his more diverse and dynamic style could yield significant benefits for a Newcastle team undergoing various transitions.
