Leading the charge: Leeds poised to make a substantial bid for “super-fast” Nmecha upgrade.

Leeds United appear set to return to Premier League action next season, as they hold a seven-point advantage over the relegation zone with three matches remaining.

With their survival nearly assured, Daniel Farke and the recruitment team can begin strategizing for the summer transfer window.

One player currently at Leeds who may face the risk of losing his position next season is centre-forward Lukas Nmecha, despite netting six goals in 28 appearances and making nine starts in the Premier League.

The Germany international has managed to score only four non-penalty goals in those 28 top-flight matches, and he has created just one ‘big chance’ while providing one assist for his teammates.

Farke may seek greater consistency and quality from his second-choice centre-forward to offer Dominic Calvert-Lewin real competition for his spot in the lineup.

Nmecha has proven to be a valuable addition for the club, having joined on a free transfer from Wolfsburg, but the Whites may desire more if they aim to advance in the Premier League and vie for European spots next season.

The West Yorkshire club should not settle for mere survival in the top tier, and the caliber of players they are reportedly targeting indicates their ambition.

As per Football Insider, Leeds United are at the forefront of the competition against Coventry City to secure Juventus centre-forward Lois Openda in the forthcoming summer transfer window.

The report suggests that the Whites are ready to extend a ‘significant’ offer to acquire the Belgian striker and are prepared to provide him with ‘substantial wages’ to facilitate his move to Elland Road.

It further states that the club’s preferred transfer approach would involve an initial loan with an option or obligation to permanently sign him in the summer of 2027, along with a lucrative short-term wage offer to enhance the deal.

Openda is set to join Juventus permanently from RB Leipzig for £35m this summer, but it is uncertain how much they will seek to recoup if Leeds makes an inquiry.

How Lois Openda could be a better option than Lukas Nmecha for Leeds United

The £35m-rated player may not seem like an improvement over Nmecha based on his current season’s performance, having netted only two goals in 36 matches across all competitions.

Nonetheless, Openda’s previous performances for RB Leipzig, Lens, and Vitesse indicate that he has the capability to contribute significantly more to the team than the German forward.

The 26-year-old striker outperformed Nmecha by an impressive 61 goals between the 2021/22 and 2024/25 seasons, with his statistics for Juventus appearing to be an anomaly.

Openda consistently found the back of the net in the Netherlands, France, and Germany prior to his difficulties in Italy, suggesting that Leeds should not be deterred by his current form.

The Belgian international, praised as “super-fast” by Philippe Clement, also exceeded his expected goals (xG) in both seasons with Leipzig in Germany, scoring 13 goals from an xG of 11.46 last season and 28 goals from 25.77 xG in the 2023/24 season.

In contrast, Nmecha has netted six goals from an xG of 6.77 in the Premier League for Leeds and three goals from 4.34 xG for Wolfsburg last season.

Thus, Openda could present a more significant and clinical threat at the forefront of the attack as a potential alternative to Calvert-Lewin for Leeds in the Premier League next season, should the club succeed in acquiring his services.

The Juventus misfit also boasts an impressive injury record throughout his career, having missed only one match due to injury as a senior player, while Nmecha has been sidelined for a staggering 77 games due to injuries.

Openda may prove to be a more dependable option for Leeds in the long term, given his availability compared to the German striker, while also possessing the potential to be a far greater scoring threat in the Premier League.

This is the reason Leeds needs to expedite this deal before Coventry does, as his addition could enhance Farke’s choices in the attacking phase.
