FSG is preparing to make a bid for Liverpool to acquire the £21m “machine”; he could help make Isak world-class once more

According to his current Liverpool teammate Virgil van Dijk, Alexander Isak was regarded as the “most in-form striker… in world football” just a year ago, as the Swede went on to defeat Arne Slot’s team in the Carabao Cup final.

Fast forward to today, and the 26-year-old has yet to reach 20 appearances on Merseyside, much less 20 goals, as he endures a season plagued by fitness and injury challenges following a lengthy summer saga.

Limited to merely five touches during the first half of Tuesday’s Champions League loss to Paris Saint-Germain, Isak has not come close to the form he displayed while at Tyneside.

Liverpool is preparing to pursue a move for a £21m Premier League talent.

There may be a belief that simply spending money won’t solve the issues at Anfield this summer; however, with Mo Salah and Andy Robertson among those likely to leave, the squad still requires substantial reinforcement.

There has already been speculation regarding a deal for Bournemouth’s Marcos Senesi, although, like Robertson, the Argentine seems destined for Tottenham Hotspur, assuming Roberto De Zerbi’s team can avoid relegation.

The relegation battle for Spurs could also influence Liverpool’s interest in a key player from De Zerbi’s squad, specifically Pedro Porro, with Anfield Watch reporting that the Spaniard is a target for the Reds as they approach the summer.

The report indicates that the former Sporting CP defender is one of the players that FSG is ‘prepared to sign’ ahead of the next season, suggesting a potential bid after stating that the club is ‘lining up a move’ for the attack-minded right-back.

Those at Anfield are thought to see a move for the 26-year-old as a possible bargain, should Tottenham face relegation, recalling how they previously signed Robertson from relegated Hull City back in 2017.

Regarding the price, it was reported in February that Porro might leave for a fee of approximately €25m (£21m), with his current contract in north London set to expire in 2028.

Why Porro could be the ideal signing for Isak at Anfield

A lack of pre-season preparation and a late challenge from Porro’s Tottenham teammate, Micky van de Ven, have been significant challenges for Isak this season. Even when he has played, Liverpool has seldom managed to maximize his potential.

According to Arne Slot, the club is missing a player similar to Jacob Murphy, who Isak had during his time at Newcastle, where they developed a formidable partnership under Eddie Howe.

Murphy, playing on the right wing, was a significant asset with his precise crosses into the penalty area, and the duo combined for 13 goals across all competitions during their time together, marking the highest tally of Isak’s career thus far.

In Trent Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool’s £125m acquisition may have found a new creative partner to collaborate with. However, with the Englishman potentially moving to Real Madrid, it could be Porro who steps in to fill that gap next season.

Naturally, the Spurs player has been part of a historically underperforming team this season, and like Alexander-Arnold, his defensive capabilities have come under scrutiny, having made five errors leading to shots in the 2025/26 season, while being dribbled past an average of 1.3 times per game.

Nonetheless, the full-back, referred to as a “machine” by football.london’s Alasdair Gold, has previously demonstrated his creative prowess, notably achieving seven assists and creating 13 ‘big chances’ as Spurs finished fifth in 2023/24, while averaging 1.5 key passes per game.

Even in the previous season, the £21m player still managed to record six assists, create ten ‘big chances’, and average 1.7 key passes per game.

For comparison, the aforementioned Murphy recorded 12 assists, created 16 ‘big chances’, and averaged 1.3 key passes in the 2024/25 season, albeit while playing as a right-winger.

Porro’s impressive total of 26 assists for Spurs across all competitions is certainly noteworthy, especially for a right-back, indicating he could be the key player to provide Isak with opportunities, similar to what Murphy accomplished last season.

It was that connection with Newcastle that propelled Howe’s team to victory at Wembley last year, during a period when Isak was regarded as world-class by Van Dijk’s standards, with Porro potentially being the ideal addition to help the Scandinavian reach those heights once more.

Although the Spain international may have some defensive shortcomings, whether from set pieces or in open play, his creative talent is a striker’s dream.
