“First signing: 100% confirmed” – Fabrizio Romano has verified a significant transfer that has Liverpool within its scope.

Liverpool Football Club has officially lost the opportunity to sign previously targeted Ederson, as Manchester United has finalized the agreement.

Fabrizio Romano announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the Red Devils ‘have now completed all documents’ for a €45m [£38.8m] deal.

The Merseysiders are still anticipated to enhance their midfield in the upcoming months. However, the degree of this enhancement will likely depend on potential movements involving Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones, who is linked with Inter Milan.

Manchester United has secured ex-Liverpool target Ederson from Atalanta.

Manchester United and Atalanta have finalized all paperwork for a €45m package deal for Éderson.

Everything is settled, and the player is set to sign later this summer, with agreements in place with Éderson since May.

Ederson would have posed challenges as a transfer.

It is important to note that we have previously raised some concerns regarding the 26-year-old Brazilian at Empire of the Kop.

While he is evidently adept at advancing the ball, Ederson seems to lack the attributes that would make him a good fit for the dynamic style required in a midfield led by Jurgen Klopp or Andoni Iraola.

As reported by The Athletic: “He plays the percentages, keeping things straightforward the closer he is to his own goal. He enjoys simple one-two, pass-and-move sequences to facilitate ball progression, and he often executes a ‘wall’ (or ‘bounce’) pass when he receives a ‘man on!’ alert or senses he might lose possession.

“Regrettably, his passing can become loose under pressure, which may place his teammates in difficult situations.”

Dependable and cautious… some may argue that this approach is fitting in a midfield trio that also includes playmaker Florian Wirtz.

However, the truth of the matter is that Liverpool’s midfield requires a bit more intensity; it needs additional grit and toughness. Throughout much of the 2025/26 season, it has been remarkably easy for opponents to navigate through our midfield.

If we are going to take a chance on a risk-taker like Wirtz at the forefront, we must have players behind him who are ready to support. We need effort, work ethic, and consistency in shutting down passing lanes, among other things.

Not necessarily a classic, traditional ‘destroyer’ in the number six role, but ideally someone who possesses similar attributes without being as narrowly focused as, for instance, Joao Palhinha. Think more along the lines of Fabinho rather than the Bayern Munich loanee.

Thus, while it is often seen as unfortunate to watch Liverpool-associated players head over the M62, in this case, we believe we can accept it.
