David Ornstein reports that Liverpool has submitted a £50 million offer for a forward following a contentious transfer involving Newcastle United.

In the lead-up to Sunday’s Premier League match at St James’ Park, Liverpool is reportedly pursuing a former Newcastle player.

Liverpool’s bid for Yankuba Minteh, a former winger for Newcastle United, has been turned down by Brighton & Hove Albion.

As stated by David Ornstein in The Athletic, Brighton has rejected a £50 million offer for the 22-year-old winger. Minteh is viewed as a controversial figure by Newcastle fans, not due to his personal conduct but rather what his transfer signifies.

In 2024, Newcastle was compelled to sell the young winger to Brighton to adhere to the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules. Minteh had only been acquired by Newcastle the previous summer for £6 million and was subsequently loaned to Feyenoord, where he had a successful season under coach Arne Slot.

Despite not making any appearances for Newcastle, Minteh was sold for £33 million. Concurrently, Elliot Anderson was transferred to Nottingham Forest for £35 million.

Anderson has since made history this summer by becoming the most expensive English player ever, joining Manchester City for £116 million. Now, Minteh appears poised for a significant transfer fee.

This situation serves as a stark reminder of the challenges Newcastle faced due to the Premier League’s financial regulations. As previously noted by The Gazette, Anderson’s move to Forest was executed without any sell-on or buyback clauses, a consequence of the urgency surrounding the deal.

Reflecting on the Anderson transfer last season, former Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe remarked: “It certainly was a rushed deal because we were on the clock and trying to explore every avenue to try and find another way to beat a points deduction.

“However, in terms of buy-backs, we weren’t in a strong negotiating position at all, so our ability to negotiate those terms was virtually non-existent.”

It is understood that the agreement for the Minteh deal was made under comparable conditions. Therefore, if Liverpool presents a better offer for Minteh that Brighton accepts, Newcastle would not receive any compensation. Minteh’s previous club, Odense, earned 10% of the profit when Newcastle sold the winger to Brighton two years ago.

Since that time, Minteh has adjusted well to the Premier League, netting 10 goals in 73 appearances for Brighton, including matches both at home and away against Newcastle. Although he has never played for United, the Gambian winger chose not to celebrate in the usual manner during both encounters.

Currently, Minteh is sidelined due to an injury that will keep him out for approximately eight weeks following surgery, but he is reportedly interested in a potential transfer if a fee can be negotiated.
