Leeds United has been informed that they will need to spend over £40 million to secure a key attacking target this summer, following their unsuccessful attempt to sign Julian Brandt.

Ajax has successfully acquired the former Borussia Dortmund player, who was highly sought after by Leeds. The Dutch club signed the winger on a free transfer after his contract in Germany ended.

This development was a setback for Leeds, prompting the Premier League team to reassess their recruitment strategy. Daniel Farke’s squad has now faced another challenge, as they have learned that Marseille is asking for a substantial fee to release Igor Paixao.

Marseille has placed a £42 million price tag on the player Leeds is interested in.

Leeds United’s interest in Paixao surfaced over the weekend, with the club having previously been linked to the Brazilian a year ago. Last season, Paixao scored 12 goals and provided seven assists in 42 matches for Marseille.

The Ligue 1 club is under pressure to make sales this summer, as UEFA is scrutinizing their finances due to a breach of regulations. Players like Mason Greenwood, Hamed Traore, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have already left, and Foot Mercato reports that Paixao could be the next to go.

It is said that the winger is currently the third choice for Leeds at Elland Road, and Marseille’s valuation may complicate any potential deal.

Marseille’s owner, Franck McCourt, has reportedly set a high price of €50 million for the player, which is approximately £42 million. This amount is between €15 million and €20 million more than what Leeds is believed to be willing to offer.

Paixao joined the south of France last summer in a £30 million transfer from Feyenoord and has four years remaining on his current contract.

The winger has expressed a strong desire to play in the Premier League. In an interview with GE Globo in 2022, Paixao stated: “The Premier League is a dream for me. Making it to the national team is another goal.”

“I am determined to strive for my goal of attending the Olympic Games. Additionally, I wish to provide my family with a better future, enhance my ability to help them, and develop a successful career in football.”

Paixao did not qualify for the 2024 Olympics, as Brazil, the two-time defending champions, failed to secure a spot. Since his move to Europe from his home country in 2022, he has played exclusively in the Netherlands and France.

Last season, the player was given the opportunity to play in the Champions League against Newcastle United and Liverpool, participating for 90 minutes in a 2-1 win over the Magpies in France, followed by a brief appearance in the 3-1 loss to Liverpool.
