Riccardo Calafiori addresses the controversy surrounding Leandro Trossard’s red card, breaking the silence within Arsenal’s dressing room…
Riccardo Calafiori sheds light on the silence within Arsenal’s dressing room in relation to the debated red card shown to Leandro Trossard.
Calafiori has shared his perspective on the incident that led to his teammate receiving a second yellow card.
He is the first Arsenal player to publicly comment on the contentious second yellow card issued to Leandro Trossard during the 2-2 draw against Manchester City.
Trossard was dismissed just before halftime for kicking the ball away after referee Michael Oliver had signaled a foul.
The brief interval between the whistle and Trossard’s action has prompted some fans to argue that the Belgian forward was treated unfairly at the Etihad Stadium.
As a result, Arsenal had to navigate the second half with only ten players and were on the verge of securing a remarkable victory until John Stones equalized in the 98th minute.
Calafiori had previously equalized for Arsenal with a remarkable left-footed shot from distance that found the top right corner.
Following his first Premier League goal, the Italian expressed his thoughts on Trossard’s dismissal to the media.
He stated, “I don’t want to elaborate too much, but referees need to ensure the game remains enjoyable.
In situations like this, they shouldn’t overreact. I believe Leo might not have even heard the whistle. Come on… do your job, but don’t go overboard.”
Trossard’s sending off significantly influenced the match at the Etihad, forcing Arsenal into a resolute defensive stance in the second half.
Their only shot on goal during that period came from Kai Havertz, who, despite starting as a center forward, spent much of the half playing a defensive role.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta also expressed his dissatisfaction with Oliver’s decision, noting, “This has occurred twice in five matches, which is quite concerning to witness in the top league.”
Playing with 11 players presents significant challenges, but with only 10, it becomes unfeasible. When reduced to 10 players, constant defense of your six-yard box is essential.
