Report: Newcastle hastily initiate discussions to secure star player and avert another hijacking

The summer transfer window is proving to be an increasingly frustrating time for Newcastle United each year. Despite their financial power, they have struggled significantly in the market over the past 12 months.

The exit of Alexander Isak left a bitter taste last summer, a situation the Magpies may need to acclimate to. Anthony Gordon has already completed his transfer to Barcelona, with Newcastle profiting £69m, and Sandro Tonali might soon follow, even after Newcastle turned down Tottenham’s £75m bid.

These departures should ideally provide Newcastle with the means to invest heavily, but they must execute their plans effectively. Last summer was largely spent in a futile chase, as Liverpool swooped in to sign Isak, hijacked their deal for Hugo Ekitike, and left them scrambling for Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa. It was nothing short of a calamity.

Those at Tyneside are experiencing a similar predicament a year later, with the Reds unexpectedly signing Victor Munoz ahead of Newcastle, leaving them back at square one.

They have been compelled to re-evaluate their summer strategy once again, and it appears that everyone at St James’ Park is growing weary of seeing their targets slip away.

Newcastle has reportedly made a bid to acquire Udinese’s Arthur Atta, while also engaging in discussions to secure a crucial defender before Bayer Leverkusen can disrupt their plans.

Newcastle hastens negotiations to sign defender

This time, the Magpies are determined not to miss out on their target. According to TeamTalk, Newcastle has resumed talks to sign Dayann Methalie from Toulouse.

It seemed that the Premier League club was in a strong position to secure their target, with interest dating back to January, but they have been compelled to accelerate their efforts due to Leverkusen’s involvement.

With the appointment of former Toulouse manager Carles Martínez Novell, the German club now holds a significant advantage in the pursuit of Methalie.

Their new manager is actively facilitating the acquisition of the 20-year-old left-back, aiming to reunite with a player he significantly helped develop.

However, Newcastle has different plans. They have re-entered negotiations to thwart yet another potential hijacking.

The arrival of Methalie could signal the end of Lewis Hall’s tenure at Newcastle.

Alongside Tonali and Gordon, Lewis Hall might also be on his way out of Newcastle. Recent reports suggest that the defender has had a falling out with Eddie Howe, blaming the manager for his exclusion from Thomas Tuchel’s England squad.

These speculations have piqued the interest of Manchester United, who are now looking to bring Hall to Old Trafford. Currently, the Magpies would prefer to retain their defender, but Methalie’s arrival could alter that situation.

They would have an immediate replacement, and this time it would be before any sale occurs. For all involved, including Hall, it is a deal that Newcastle should finalize this summer.

What other players could Newcastle target?

However, this may not be the end of Newcastle’s summer activities. They are also eyeing players like James Trafford and Folarin Balogun as part of a significant overhaul.

PIF will have the financial resources to invest within Newcastle’s SCR framework, allowing them to finally reshape Howe’s squad into a team that does not solely depend on individual talents, who are always at risk of leaving.
