Leeds hold in-person talks to sign £50m-rated star who could be their new Noah Okafor…
Leeds are engaging in face-to-face discussions to acquire the £50m-rated star who could potentially become their new Noah Okafor.
Following a season filled with uncertainty, Daniel Farke is poised to replicate Marcelo Bielsa’s success at Leeds once more.
Having achieved promotion from the Championship, they are now on the verge of solidifying their status as a Premier League team for another season.
At one point, it seemed likely that Farke would be dismissed, but a tactical shift midway through the season not only secured his position but also revitalized Leeds’ prospects.
The hope is that the German manager does not mirror Bielsa’s second season in the Premier League, which ultimately ended in failure. Their performance may heavily rely on recruitment, and plans are already underway.
Leeds are aiming to sign a £50m-rated young talent.
To their credit, Leeds made significant improvements last summer, and they will need to do so again if they wish to stay in the league.
One of the key signings has been Noah Okafor, who, similar to Morgan Gibbs-White at Nottingham Forest, has thrived during the final stretch of the season.
The winger has had an inconsistent season but is currently enjoying the best form of his Leeds career, notably scoring twice against Manchester United nine days ago.
Although Okafor was not as prolific last weekend, he still contributed with a goal and an assist against Wolves.
With the Old Gold now officially relegated, Leeds may look to the Molineux club first in their search for new players.
This information comes from TEAMtalk, which reports that four of Rob Edwards’ players have caught the attention of the recruitment team at Elland Road.
One of these players is £25m-rated defender Ladislav Krejci, who appears certain to depart the Midlands at the end of the season.
Reports indicate that after Saturday’s match, Leeds officials engaged in talks with the Wolves management regarding Krejci, as well as several other players, including midfielders Joao Gomes and Andre.
The discussions surrounding Mateus Mane, one of the standout players of this Premier League season and a rare bright spot at Molineux, were perhaps the most thrilling.
However, previous reports have indicated a £50m asking price amid interest from Manchester United, making this situation complex.
How Mane could mirror Okafor’s impact for Leeds
Since his summer transfer from AC Milan for £18m, Okafor has exemplified a streaky player.
This isn’t necessarily negative, but Farke has likely felt frustration with his winger, aware of the potential he can showcase when fully engaged.
All of the Swiss winger’s contributions to goals this season have occurred during brief spells of form.
His initial two goals for Leeds were scored within three matches of each other, netting against Wolves and Tottenham at the end of September and the start of October.
His subsequent two Premier League goals were scored in back-to-back matches against Forest and Chelsea in February, and currently, he has achieved four goal contributions in his last two games.
He has been dynamic around a hamstring injury and is performing well in Leeds colors at a crucial moment.
With his directness, aggressive running, and quick footwork, Leeds could acquire a player very similar to Mane.
At just 18 years old, he has emerged as one of the top young talents in the league this season. Although he has only netted twice and provided two assists, this does not fully capture the essence of the teenager’s season.
Versatile enough to play anywhere along the front line, including on Okafor’s preferred left flank, he has made a significant impact in that role, as well as in positions behind the striker and as a center forward.
When analyzing both players, it is evident that their most effective performances occur in central areas. Both of Mane’s Premier League goals have been scored while he was positioned as an attacking midfielder, while Okafor has netted four goals in five matches this season in the same role.
Where else do they share similarities? For starters, they generate a comparable number of opportunities per 90 minutes, with Leeds’ Swiss forward contributing 1.2 chances per 90 minutes. In comparison, Mane has created one chance per 90, for context.
Additionally, both players are exceptionally challenging to contain during transitions. Okafor has achieved 2.2 successful take-ons per 90 in the Premier League this season, the highest in the Leeds squad. On the other hand, Mane has been fouled 1.7 times per game, the most in the Wolves team.
Perhaps the most thrilling aspect of this potential transfer is that they could seamlessly coexist in the same lineup, with one positioned wide left and the other playing centrally.
£50m is undoubtedly a hefty price, but if they can negotiate it down by even £15m, they would secure an excellent deal.
Making such a significant impact in his debut Premier League season at such a young age is no small achievement. He is poised for a remarkable career at the highest level.
