PL make announcement on controversial moment in Man United vs Leeds…
The Premier League has issued a statement regarding the controversial incident involving Lisandro Martinez’s red card during the match between Manchester United and Leeds.
In their announcement, the Premier League clarified the circumstances surrounding Martinez’s dismissal in Leeds United’s 2-1 victory over Manchester United.
Martinez received his red card from referee Paul Tierney just over ten minutes into the second half of the Premier League match held at Old Trafford.
The Argentine player was sent off for yanking on Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair with such force that it dislodged his opponent’s hairband.
This incident occurred while Manchester United was already trailing by two goals, following Noah Okafor’s brace in the first half.
The Premier League has now provided an update on the situation via their X account regarding the match between Leeds and Manchester United.
Referee Paul Tierney had no alternative but to issue a red card for Lisandro Martinez.
Although Martinez may have believed he escaped punishment for pulling Calvert-Lewin’s hair, the presence of VAR technology ensured that he could not evade the consequences.
Gary Neville firmly stated during Sky Sports’ coverage that Martinez would indeed be sent off, which ultimately proved to be correct.
Following Tierney’s on-field decision, a message from the Premier League Match Centre stated: “After VAR review, the referee issued a red card to Martínez for violent conduct.
“Referee announcement: ‘After review, Manchester United’s Martínez is guilty of pulling his opponent’s hair – violent conduct. The final decision is a red card.'”
This marks the second consecutive match in which Manchester United has had a player sent off, following Harry Maguire’s dismissal in the 2-2 draw against Bournemouth before the international break.
Sky Sports addressed the confusion surrounding Martinez’s red card.
Martinez appeared surprised by the referee’s ruling, even though it was anticipated by others.
Sky commentator Seb Hutchinson remarked during the live broadcast: “The reason for the confusion was that Martinez did not hear the referee’s announcement.”
Nonetheless, Sky commentator Seb Hutchinson remarked during the live broadcast: “The confusion arose because Martinez was unable to hear the referee’s announcement.”
So, that’s settled. Aside from a few careless moments from Leeds, the Whites performed exceptionally well at Old Trafford, making it a memorable away day.
Although Casemiro managed to score one goal, creating a tense finish, it only made the celebrations at full-time even more enjoyable as Leeds moved significantly closer to securing their safety.
