Liverpool is in discussions to acquire “one of the best 6s in world football,” who is being compared to the new Fabinho – opinion
This summer is set to be significant for Liverpool, with Arne Slot anticipated to spearhead the efforts.
Throughout this season, it has often seemed that the Dutch manager has been on shaky ground. Although Liverpool will not secure any trophies this year, they have recently regained their form in the Premier League and are likely to qualify for the Champions League next season.
Nevertheless, the Anfield club is approaching the summer transfer window with several pressing questions: Will Slot actually begin the new season in charge? Who will Liverpool recruit following Mohamed Salah’s departure on a free transfer? Can this squad contend for the Premier League title?
There is much to ponder, and while Liverpool’s defensive issues have been somewhat alleviated after the January transfer window, with Jeremy Jacquet joining for £60m, the team still faces significant challenges in midfield.
Liverpool in negotiations for Mac Allister upgrade
Three years ago, Liverpool overhauled their midfield, but they will need to make further changes this summer, putting Alexis Mac Allister’s position at risk.
The 27-year-old Argentina international has had a disappointing season, being at the heart of Liverpool’s numerous issues. It may be time for Liverpool to consider a change; if they continue with their current midfield lineup, it could have severe implications for the future of Slot’s management.
According to sources linked with TEAMtalk, Liverpool has engaged in discussions with Real Madrid regarding a cash-plus-player arrangement that would send Mac Allister to Spain, with Eduardo Camavinga coming to Liverpool in return.
Spanish reports suggest that Real Madrid would be open to letting the French international go for approximately £61m this summer, a figure that would be quite reasonable for a player who could become a key figure at Merseyside.
Liverpool must invest this summer, and given Mac Allister’s prolonged struggles over the past year, this presents an ideal opportunity for Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes to rejuvenate the midfield.
Why Camavinga would be an ideal fit for Liverpool
It wouldn’t be the first instance of Liverpool acquiring a Real Madrid player who didn’t quite reach the pinnacle at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Let’s recall Fabinho, who joined Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool from Monaco only after making a name for himself with Los Blancos, where he made a single appearance for the senior team (and provided an assist during that match) after progressing through the academy.
Now 32 and playing in Saudi Arabia, Fabinho is recognized as one of the most formidable midfielders of his era, and Camavinga could potentially become Slot’s equivalent next season, already praised as a “world-class” talent by scout Jacek Kulig.
After all, the 23-year-old has demonstrated his ability to deliver 10/10 performances against English teams like Liverpool. His passing is sharp, his movements are lively, and his tackles are impactful.
In 21 La Liga matches this season, Camavinga has illustrated exactly why he has been regarded as “one of the best 6’s in world football” by journalist Harvey Diamonds.
He has successfully completed 65% of his dribbles and won 63% of his duels. His ball control is exceptional, losing possession only 5.2 times on average per matchday. This is precisely what Liverpool requires: a player who can seamlessly fit into the No. 6 position, potentially allowing Ryan Gravenberch to operate more freely in a dynamic midfield role.
There is certainly a Fabinho-like quality to that. The Brazilian was a strong central figure, yet he was also intelligent and composed with the ball, consistently making the right choices.
Camavinga must demonstrate that he can maintain consistency and steer clear of injuries, but if he secures a spot in Liverpool’s midfield, he could follow in Fabinho’s footsteps, showcasing his ‘world-class’ talent after departing from Madrid.
