This summer has been unexpectedly quiet for Liverpool, who have cautiously entered the transfer market. While the other members of the Premier League’s ‘Big Six’ have collectively spent over £800m on new players, the Reds have largely held back.

So far, only two major signings have been finalized. Forward Victor Munoz joined from Osasuna for £34.5m, and Jeremy Jacquet was brought in from Rennes for £55m, a deal that was agreed upon back in February.

The limited activity is surprising, especially with the new head coach Andoni Iraola looking to adjust the squad to fit his tactical approach. Additionally, Liverpool must address the significant challenge of replacing Mo Salah, whose exit has created a considerable gap in their offensive lineup.

The club’s cautious strategy stands in stark contrast to last summer, when they splurged an astonishing £446m and set the British transfer record twice. However, with the new season fast approaching, their current restraint in the transfer market is not expected to persist for long. With this in mind, here are four potential transfers for Liverpool that could be approved this month.

Bradley Barcola – £120m

PSG’s Bradley Barcola has become Liverpool’s primary target in attack following the cooling interest in Yan Diomande, who appears to be heading to Real Madrid. The 23-year-old has made a name for himself as one of Europe’s most thrilling forwards, amassing an impressive 34 goals and 28 assists over the last two seasons in France.

Despite his impressive stats, Barcola is facing stiff competition for a starting position at PSG, with Ousmane Dembele, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Desire Doue all vying for places in the front three. Furthermore, the Ligue 1 club is nearing the signings of Maghnes Akliouche and Mika Godts, which will further intensify the competition for a spot in the starting lineup.

Consequently, Barcola is open to transferring to a club where he can assume a more significant role, and according to the French publication Le10Sport, he is “thrilled” at the prospect of joining Liverpool and is “excited” about Iraola’s vision. However, extracting him from PSG will prove to be a challenging endeavor.

The ECHO reported last week that discussions between the two clubs regarding a potential deal for Barcola are expected to commence, with the Ligue 1 giants believed to value the forward at approximately £140 million. Liverpool aims to negotiate a deal around the £100 million range, although a compromise near £120 million might ultimately suffice to secure the transfer.

Liverpool ideally requires a natural right winger to succeed Salah, while Barcola’s preferred position is on the opposite side. Nevertheless, the Frenchman’s versatility allows him to effectively play on either flank. More importantly, he is arguably the only wide player currently available who possesses the combination of goals, assists, and attacking contributions necessary to approximate the output Salah has consistently provided over the years.

Ezri Konsa – £60m

Enhancing the centre-back position has become a priority for Liverpool following Ibrahima Konate’s exit after his contract ended in June. The addition of Jeremy Jacquet has provided some depth, but at just 21 years old and lacking Premier League experience, the Frenchman cannot be expected to take on that responsibility right away.

What Liverpool requires is a defender capable of making an immediate impact – someone with established Premier League experience, leadership qualities, and reliability. Ezri Konsa is an ideal candidate. The Aston Villa standout, who played a crucial role for England during the World Cup, has quietly become one of the league’s most reliable centre-backs.

Comfortable playing in a high defensive line, Konsa excels in one-on-one situations and remains consistently composed while in possession. As he enters the prime years of his career, his versatility stands out, with the 28-year-old also capable of stepping in at right back—a position Liverpool is still seeking to solidify following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s exit last summer.

Reports indicate that Liverpool may challenge Villa’s determination with a bid around £60m, and that the player might be ‘open’ to leaving Villa Park. It would require a substantial offer to persuade the Midlands club to part with one of their key players, but such an amount could be hard to resist for a defender nearing his 30s.

Matias Fernandez-Pardo – £60m

Liverpool has been linked with a potential acquisition of versatile Lille forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo, with a £60m deal possibly in the works this summer. The Belgium international’s adaptability is one of his key attributes, as the 21-year-old can play as a No. 9, No. 10, or on either wing.

According to the French publication L’Equipe, Fernandez-Pardo is advocating for a transfer and has submitted a transfer request. However, Lille is resolute in their intention to retain the player they acquired from Gent for just £8.6m two years ago.

Liverpool already boasts strong options at centre forward, with Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike serving as their two primary striker choices. Nevertheless, Ekitike’s recovery from a serious Achilles injury means he will miss the beginning of the season, leaving Iraola lacking reliable attacking depth.

Thus, Fernandez-Pardo could serve as an ideal short-term solution, especially considering his capacity to function in various attacking roles.
