Fabrizio Romano confirms Liverpool can complete bargain £47m deal for £85.5m monster…
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Liverpool can secure a bargain deal worth £47m for the £85.5m player.
Liverpool holds a buy option valued at €55m [£47m], which they may activate for the loaned player Ronald Araujo.
Romano updated his previous statement, clarifying that he had initially informed his audience that the Reds did not possess a buy option in the agreement that took the center-back from Barcelona.
The Uruguayan has participated in all but two of Liverpool’s first five matches this season across all competitions.
Fabrizio Romano: Liverpool has a buy option for Ronald Araujo.
The Italian transfer expert exclusively shared with CaughtOffside: “Many of you have been inquiring about his future and contract situation. I want to clarify something. I mentioned on a podcast that there was no buy option clause.
“Thus, Liverpool did not have a buy option clause in the agreement. That was incorrect. As I stated during the summer, it was simply my error. I can confirm that the information I provided in August was accurate. There is indeed a buy option clause for Liverpool, and it is set at €55 million. This is the buy option available to Liverpool.
“Therefore, if Liverpool wishes to retain Araujo, they are aware of the terms of the deal.”
Consequently, Liverpool has the opportunity to sign Araujo from Barcelona before the conclusion of his loan period at Anfield.

While those at Camp Nou, along with many neutral observers, may be eager to point out the potential downsides of this deal due to the player’s previous challenges in Spain, there is substantial evidence to suggest otherwise.
Even if we set aside the fact that Liverpool has clearly been interested in this player for quite some time, it is important to highlight that Ronald Araujo’s value was once so elevated that Barcelona would only entertain offers around the €100m [£85.5m] threshold. ESPN reports that Bayern Munich was perceived as the primary contender in this potential transfer scenario. However, a definitive move never came to fruition.
Using the £85.5m figure as a benchmark, Liverpool has the opportunity to acquire a top-tier centre-back in European football for nearly half of his previously reported peak valuation.
How has Araujo performed at Liverpool thus far?
After a summer transfer window where £85.5m could secure a player valued at £47m in recent years, we find ourselves with a potentially significant market opportunity.
While skeptics may rightly point out that it is still early in Araujo’s career at L4, and there were indications that the Uruguay international seemed somewhat out of place at right-back during our 0-0 draw against Fulham last weekend, he has otherwise stepped in comfortably when needed at right-back and appears to be a solid option at centre-back whenever Virgil van Dijk or Jeremy Jacquet require rest.
In the matches he has started (all at right-back), the 27-year-old has achieved an average rating of 7.16/10 (Fotmob), which is notably higher than Jeremie Frimpong’s average of 6.9/10 (Fotmob) for the two games he has started in the 2026/27 season.
We acknowledge that this is an extremely limited sample size. However, can anyone recall a loan signing making such a positive impact at Liverpool in the past decade? One would have to look back to Javier Mascherano (2006/07) and Nicolas Anelka (2001/02).
Thus, it is reasonable to conclude that our recent track record with loan signings has not been particularly consistent. Nevertheless, Ronald Araujo seems to have defied this trend.
