Newcastle in pole position to sign wanted man as second offer for World Cup star imminent…
Newcastle is currently in a strong position to sign a highly sought-after player, bringing some positive news for Eddie Howe as the club faces speculation regarding significant player departures.
A sense of uncertainty looms over St James’ Park, with key midfielders Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimarães being linked to lucrative transfers.
Tonali is attracting considerable interest from Tottenham Hotspur, who are reportedly preparing a substantial second bid for the Italian international.
Meanwhile, Guimarães has caught the attention of Liverpool, who have joined Manchester United in their pursuit of the Brazilian, although Arsenal appears to be in the best position to secure his services.
Amidst this challenging atmosphere, Newcastle is actively seeking new players to enhance Eddie Howe’s squad, with recent reports indicating their renewed interest in Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford.
The Magpies are competing with several Premier League clubs for the 23-year-old, who is eager to leave the Etihad Stadium just a year after his return in search of a starting position.
According to Football Insider, Newcastle is in a favorable position to acquire the England international, with Aston Villa also expressing interest.
It has been reported that Trafford will need guarantees of being the first-choice goalkeeper at any club he joins this summer, following his return to City being overshadowed by Gianluigi Donnarumma’s arrival.
On their end, Newcastle has already secured a new goalkeeper this summer, signing Ewen Jaouen for £24 million from Stade de Reims.
The 20-year-old is expected to play a supporting role behind a new No.1 in his first Premier League season, while Trafford is poised to take on a significant role at one of the league’s top clubs.
Newcastle’s second attempt at signing Trafford
Trafford was on the verge of joining Newcastle last summer, but Manchester City intervened, exercising the matching rights clause included in his 2023 transfer to Burnley to bring him back.
The England international accepted the offer with the expectation of being Pep Guardiola’s preferred choice, only for Donnarumma to join from PSG shortly thereafter.
Nevertheless, Newcastle has continued to show interest and is now poised to make a renewed effort to secure the player.
Currently, Trafford is representing England at the World Cup in North America, and it is anticipated that his future will be clarified once the Three Lions’ campaign concludes.
When asked about his future recently, Trafford remarked: “You never know, whether I move, whether I don’t move, I do what’s right for me and my career.
“It’s obviously been very challenging the past season, but looking back, I’ve learned so much, I’ve developed so much. I thought I’d had a lot of experiences up to this point in my career, but this was a new experience for me in everything.”
In addition, reports suggest that another prominent Newcastle player is seeking a transfer to Manchester United this summer, which would represent another significant setback for the club.
