Jamie Carragher has put forth an intriguing theory regarding Mohamed Salah’s future at Liverpool, suggesting that the addition of Federico Chiesa could influence Salah’s decision to remain with the club.
An interesting transfer theory involving Mohamed Salah and Federico Chiesa has been put forth by Jamie Carragher.
The transfer speculation surrounding Mohamed Salah has taken an interesting turn, as Jamie Carragher introduces a theory that links him to Federico Chiesa.
Chiesa, the Italian winger, was signed just before the transfer deadline for a fee of approximately $16.4 million (£12.5 million/€14.8 million) and is expected to serve as a valuable backup for Salah during the 2024-25 season.
However, his role may extend beyond that, as the 26-year-old is anticipated to receive significant playing time under new manager Arne Slot, who is likely to implement a rotation system for key players.
While some speculate that Chiesa’s four-year contract indicates he is being groomed as Salah’s eventual replacement, Carragher offers a different perspective.
He believes that Chiesa’s presence could actually encourage Salah to extend his tenure at Anfield.
“I genuinely think that if Chiesa starts around 15 matches and Salah plays 35-40, instead of the usual 50-plus, it could allow him to continue playing for Liverpool for another two or three years,” Carragher remarked on The Gary Neville Podcast.
“He is incredibly resilient, but he shouldn’t be required to play every minute of every match. I still believe he has plenty left in the tank.”
Carragher also expressed skepticism about Salah moving to the Saudi Pro League next season, emphasizing that he is performing exceptionally well at one of the world’s premier clubs.
He noted that Chiesa’s signing is significant, especially considering the discussions surrounding Salah’s form towards the end of last season, which were fueled by concerns over an injury sustained during AFCON and speculation about a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia.
Carragher may have a point. Liverpool likely did not require an additional attacker this summer, given that they already had five players in that position.
However, the addition of Chiesa provides Salah with a much-needed alternative, alleviating the constant pressure on him to deliver top performances throughout the season.
While it remains uncertain whether Salah will extend his stay at Anfield as his contract enters its final year, Chiesa’s presence will enable him to rest and recover effectively, allowing the Italian to step in when necessary.
If this strategy helps maintain Salah’s fitness and performance levels over the season, it could extend his ability to compete at an elite level for at least another two years, as Carragher suggests.
With a reduced burden to be Liverpool’s primary star this season, Salah may be able to conserve his energy for at least one more year on Merseyside.
Consequently, fans will be hoping that Chiesa can remain injury-free to support Salah whenever required.
Carragher also posits that Salah’s intense desire to set records will keep him from leaving, and he will likely value the respite provided by Chiesa’s arrival, enabling him to perform at his peak.
“Mo Salah is reminiscent of Ronaldo. While most players consider retirement at 35, I believe he will continue playing into his late 30s. He will strive to break every record possible,” Carragher remarked.
“Many players and wingers have accumulated more medals than him, but few, if any, wide players can match his statistics and quality.
Ryan Giggs enjoyed a long career, but Salah ranks alongside Ronaldo among the greatest wide forwards in Premier League history. He is a legend for both Liverpool and the league.”
