Premier League receives a radical proposal for rule changes following West Ham’s disallowed goal against Arsenal.

A contentious VAR decision during Sunday’s match has sparked significant discussion.

A former Premier League referee has suggested a modification to the game’s regulations after Arsenal’s disputed 1–0 victory over West Ham United on Sunday.

Leandro Trossard’s goal in the 83rd minute allowed Arsenal to extend their lead to five points ahead of second-placed Manchester City with two games remaining, but the match was not without its controversies.

In stoppage time of the second half, West Ham believed they had equalized and secured a crucial point, only for the goal to be disallowed due to a foul on Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya after a four-minute VAR review.

Video Assistant Referee Darren England recommended that referee Chris Kavanagh check the pitchside monitor before ruling a foul in favor of Arsenal, concluding that Pablo had fouled Raya.

The former United goalkeeper expressed his frustration to Viaplay: “What truly angers me is that Arsenal would not be at the top of the league if that’s considered a free-kick.

“That’s how they’ve managed to score so many goals – by obstructing players, holding them, and engaging in various tactics.

“And then we arrive at this moment. It takes VAR five minutes – Darren England, the VAR – it takes five minutes.

“He keeps reviewing it over and over… that alone casts so much doubt on that decision that it cannot be a free-kick.

“I find it incredibly wrong. I simply cannot comprehend why suddenly that’s a free-kick, when it hasn’t been for any teams throughout the entire season.

“All of this – it’s just absurd. And that decision today is fundamentally wrong on multiple levels.”

Former Premier League official suggests significant rule amendment.

In the meantime, former Premier League assistant referee Darren Cann, who was featured on Match of the Day 2, believes that a revision of the game’s laws may be necessary to avoid similar controversies in the future.

Cann, who served as a match official for more than twenty years, stated: “I believe the time has arrived for a change in the law that prohibits attackers from entering the six-yard box prior to the corner being taken.

“At goal-kicks, forwards are restricted from the penalty area, and similarly, at corners, they should not be permitted in the six-yard box until the ball is in play.

“Many teams engage in grappling during corners, often before the ball is in play, which means the referee cannot award a penalty or an indirect free-kick if the ball is not yet in play.

“This would establish a natural separation and eliminate these types of situations.”

West Ham will be back in action away against Newcastle on May 17, followed by Arsenal hosting Burnley on May 18.
