Arne Slot criticizes Liverpool players and highlights the ‘only positive’ from the Man City defeat.

Arne Slot directed criticism at his Liverpool squad after suffering a 4-0 loss in the FA Cup against Manchester City.

The Liverpool manager, Arne Slot, condemned his team’s defensive performance, attributing the heavy defeat at the Etihad Stadium to their shortcomings in that area. He expressed satisfaction with the Reds’ start to the game, noting they were competitive with Pep Guardiola’s team until a penalty was awarded, which Erling Haaland successfully converted.

Following that pivotal moment, Liverpool’s performance deteriorated, leading to a second goal before halftime as Haaland outjumped Ibrahima Konate to score with a close-range header. Shortly after the break, Antoine Semenyo scored by chipping Giorgi Mamardashvili after receiving a through ball from Rayan Cherki, and Haaland completed his hat-trick by tapping into an empty net.

Liverpool had an opportunity to narrow the deficit when Hugo Ekitike was fouled in the penalty area by Matheus Nunes.

However, Mohamed Salah, in what is expected to be his farewell tour after announcing his departure from Liverpool, had his penalty saved by James Trafford.

Slot’s frustration was evident after the match concluded.

“I was pleased with our first 35 minutes, but we need to defend significantly better than we did today,” Slot remarked to HBO Max. “It’s been very disappointing, not just to be eliminated but also the way we lost. Another major letdown from us.”

He further mentioned that

“We received a penalty and had an opportunity, but that doesn’t provide me with any insights. The initial 35 minutes showcased the type of team I aspire to see, yet the following 20 minutes revealed that we must defend significantly better than we did today.

“It’s disheartening to go into half-time at 2-0, especially considering the impact on your mood after the season we’ve experienced. That was particularly difficult to accept. The only positive was that we managed to avoid conceding further goals.”

Regarding Salah’s missed penalty, the head coach remarked: “I wouldn’t single out one player; my focus is on the team, which likely reflects our performance today and perhaps throughout much of the season.

“I believe this is the second penalty he has missed, and Dominik Szoboszlai has also failed to convert a penalty, indicating that our struggles extend beyond just missing significant chances. Earlier in the first half, Mo had an opportunity during a quick counter-attack.

“Regrettably, that chance didn’t result in a goal, and scoring is essential if we hope to win th e game.”
