“We lost the match, but I can’t respect that man!” Hugo Ekitike did not hold back in publicly criticizing Rayan Cherki of Manchester City after Cherki donned Ekitike’s shirt following his substitution. Then Came the Twist Nobody Expected

Liverpool may have faced defeat in the match — yet the most significant topic of discussion arose in the closing moments when tensions flared.

Cherki donned Ekitike’s shirt after being substituted.

Rayan Cherki WORE Hugo Ekitike’s shirt after being substituted during Manchester City’s victory over Liverpool in the Emirates.

Rayan Cherki dismantles Liverpool and brings joy to Man City in a perfect response to Arsenal.

Manchester City playmaker Rayan Cherki showcased his skills on Saturday, securing another trip to Wembley for Pep Guardiola and his squad.

Rather than escalating the situation, Pep reportedly stepped in calmly, and Rayan Cherki seemed to communicate directly with Hugo Ekitike. The specifics of their conversation remain unknown — however, their body language conveyed a different narrative than what fans anticipated.

Rayan Cherki raised his hands in apology. He acknowledged that it was not the appropriate action, and he would refrain from repeating it.

He would, of course, persist with the flicks, tricks, and showboating that had previously irritated certain segments of the football community during the Carabao Cup victory over Arsenal a few weeks prior. However, after attempting to wear the shirt of his France teammate Hugo Ekitike while taking his place on the bench after outplaying Liverpool in the FA Cup, the unconventional midfielder was firmly informed that wearing a Liverpool jersey in the home dugout crossed a line.

One can understand why, but Pep Guardiola has long recognized that embracing Cherki’s unique style is essential to maximizing his potential. While kick-ups during a match may not appeal to everyone, they are part of the arsenal that few players in world football can wield as effectively.

As Liverpool discovered once more on Saturday, Cherki is exceptional. He utilized his skills to backheel Matheus Nunes into a favorable position at 1-0, assisted in creating the second goal for Erling Haaland, and then set up Antoine Semenyo for the third.

There were countless moments of play that had the crowd gasping or cheering with joy, and each time Cherki would raise his arms in the air to bask in the applause and call for more. A genuine performer who values the acknowledgment but also anticipates it.

If there was little to gain other than irritating Arsenal players with his flamboyance at the conclusion of the Wembley final, this was a step up: dismantling Liverpool. It was particularly significant considering the Liverpool squad featured the £100m Florian Wirtz, a player that many City fans were frustrated to have missed out on last summer.

Football is a peculiar sport, and it becomes infinitely more enjoyable whenever Cherki is on the field. Or even on the bench, as it turns out. The Frenchman was the catalyst for sending City back to Wembley once more, with James Trafford adding the finishing touch to a particularly delightful victory for City by denying Mo Salah from the penalty spot in his final match for Liverpool.

Haaland netting his first hat-trick for the club since August 2024 brings his total to 33 for the season and adds further momentum to a team that is striving for a strong finish to the season. Having triumphed over Arsenal and Liverpool, a visit to Chelsea next week appears more appealing despite the league’s mounting pressure.
