‘Not in an ideal situation’ – Discussions regarding a significant new contract for Liverpool have been ‘suspended’.

Reports indicate that Liverpool has halted negotiations concerning a major contract renewal at Anfield due to the team’s alarming decline in performance.

Arne Slot’s squad has suffered six losses in their last seven matches across all competitions, following a heavily altered lineup that faced a 3-0 defeat at home against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening.

A few weeks prior, the Daily Express mentioned (via Sky Sports) that the agent of the Dutch coach is collaborating with the LFC management to secure an extension of his tenure at the club beyond June 2027.

Dean Jones has also recently suggested that discussions regarding a new contract for the 47-year-old are ‘anticipated to intensify’ as the season progresses.

Nevertheless, with Liverpool’s disheartening performance showing no signs of improvement, a former CEO of Everton has stated that negotiations for Slot’s contract extension have indeed been paused, although he refrained from suggesting that the Dutchman’s position is at risk.

Liverpool halts discussions on new contract for Slot.

Keith Wyness shared on Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “We’ve been discussing Slot’s contract renegotiation and how such matters can frequently slow down.

Well, reports are emerging that negotiations have been put on hold.

“He is aware that he’s not in a favorable position to negotiate a new contract at this time. I believe that’s the extent of it. I don’t think there’s any significant pressure on him currently.

“If this poor form in the Premier League continues for another four matches, then I think we might witness some genuine concern. There’s talent within that squad, and he needs to motivate them.

“It’s not a critical issue, and I believe they can rectify it, and one would expect them to regain their form. I don’t see it as a problem. I consider it a temporary setback, and I anticipate that they will soon start performing better.

Slot is not currently at risk of losing his position.

Fabrizio Romano reported earlier this week that Slot retains the full support of the Liverpool management, and while discussions regarding a new contract seem to be on hold due to the recent disappointing results, the chances of an abrupt dismissal still appear minimal.

It is not uncommon for a coach to be let go in the season following a Premier League victory – as seen with Claudio Ranieri at Leicester and Jose Mourinho at Chelsea – but Liverpool has generally shown more patience with their managers compared to many other clubs.

The Dutchman has received criticism regarding his team selections, tactics, signings, and substitutions over the past month, much of which is warranted, but it would be irrational to dismiss the individual who led the team to a significant league title victory just a few months ago due to one (albeit prolonged) poor stretch of performance.

Should Liverpool suddenly regain their form with positive outcomes against Aston Villa, Real Madrid, and Manchester City in the upcoming fortnight, the exaggerated concerns regarding Slot’s job security would likely fade, although we acknowledge that they would intensify if results were to go in the opposite direction.

The 47-year-old must quickly put an end to the losing streak if he hopes to silence the critics, yet he still merits our support to initiate a turnaround and ideally transform this October into nothing more than a regrettable memory, similar to what Jurgen Klopp achieved with the Reds’ dismal start in 2017.
