(Photo) Liverpool fans will find Joe Gomez’s actions immediately after full-time at Anfield intriguing.

Gomez made his sixth appearance of the season as part of the Liverpool starting XI tonight, but the club’s longest-serving current player could not stop his team from suffering yet another defeat.

Despite Arne Slot’s tactical shift to a three-man defense, Crystal Palace capitalized with three unanswered goals at Anfield, once again demonstrating their dominance over the Merseysiders in 2025.

The home supporters’ disappointment was likely heightened by the sight of Marc Guehi on the opposing team, especially since he could have been playing against the Eagles on Wednesday.

As we know, a transfer to LFC for the 25-year-old was agreed upon on deadline day, only for the south London club to block the deal at the last moment.

Gomez was seen conversing with Guehi after the final whistle.

Just after the match concluded at Anfield tonight, Gomez was observed chatting with the England international in the center circle as players from both teams came together to acknowledge each other.

Lewis Steele captured a photograph of the two defenders engaged in conversation and shared the image on X, accompanied by a playful caption: ‘Joe Gomez tapping up Marc Guehi at full-time.’

The failed Guehi transfer stings even more during this current downturn.

With each successive defeat, Liverpool fans must feel an increasing sense of what could have been, having now seen their team concede 11 goals in five matches throughout October, with six of those goals coming in just the past week.

As the Reds continue to struggle defensively – Gomez was responsible for a misplayed clearance that inadvertently assisted Ismaila Sarr’s first goal tonight – Guehi continues to impress with his performance for Palace.

It is conceivable that LFC might try to acquire the Eagles captain once more in January, particularly if he is entering the final six months of his contract at Selhurst Park by that time. However, foreign clubs would have the upper hand as they could finalize a pre-contract agreement for a free transfer during that month.

To further exacerbate the disappointment for Liverpool supporters (as if we haven’t experienced enough this month), The Athletic reported today that had the Reds agreed to Palace’s £45m asking price at the beginning of the summer instead of delaying until the end, the 25-year-old would have signed right away due to his eagerness to join.

Is Guehi destined to always be ‘the one that got away’ for the Merseyside club? Perhaps, perhaps not, but at least until January, our current centre-backs must elevate their performance and transform this alarmingly fragile team into a much stronger one.
