Liverpool’s lineup against Brentford: Latest on Alexander Isak’s injury, confirmed team news today.

The record signing is uncertain for the journey to West London, with Jeremie Frimpong also now unavailable.

Liverpool forward Alexander Isak is doubtful for tonight’s match against Brentford.

The British record signing recently made his second start in four days against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League, having gradually improved his fitness following a blockbuster £125 million transfer from Newcastle on deadline day.

Isak played alongside fellow summer signing Hugo Ekitike for the first time during Wednesday’s 5-1 victory at Deutsche Bank Park, but he was substituted at half-time.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot later disclosed that the Swedish international had sustained a groin injury as he “hoped for the best” and lamented the lack of a proper pre-season, noting that he had not played for Newcastle prior to his move to Anfield.

The Dutch coach provided an additional update on Isak’s condition when he spoke to the media on Friday, ahead of Saturday night’s match against Brentford, indicating that the 26-year-old is “a question mark” for the game in West London.

“Alex, not too bad. Question mark for the weekend, so let’s see where he is,” Slot stated.

Should Isak be unable to participate, Ekitike will likely spearhead the attack at the Gtech Community Stadium as Liverpool aims to regain momentum after their significant win in Frankfurt, which ended a troubling streak of four consecutive losses in all competitions. Meanwhile, the out-of-form Mohamed Salah is looking to make a comeback after being benched midweek and only playing 16 minutes as a substitute.

Slot is also optimistic that Ryan Gravenberch can play on Saturday after missing the trip to Germany entirely due to an ankle injury that forced him off during the second half of last weekend’s surprising 2-1 home loss to Manchester United.

“He didn’t join us on the trip [to Frankfurt], so we are back in today,” Slot commented regarding his fellow countryman. “We were also in yesterday, but we had a day to travel. Let’s find out where he is today.”

Gravenberch’s usual midfield partner, Alexis Mac Allister, played most of the United match wearing protective headgear after sustaining an early injury, but he came off the bench without it in Frankfurt and is expected to return to Slot’s starting lineup on Saturday night, potentially alongside Curtis Jones or a more defensive Dominik Szoboszlai, should Gravenberch be unfit.

Giorgi Mamardashvili will continue to fill in as goalkeeper in Alisson Becker’s absence, who is still out due to a hamstring injury.

“Alisson will not be part of the squad tomorrow,” Slot stated. “This will also take a bit longer.”

Jeremie Frimpong has been ruled out for several weeks after leaving the field with his own hamstring problem in Frankfurt, which means Conor Bradley is likely to start at right-back, while Andy Robertson may make consecutive appearances on the left due to Milos Kerkez’s difficulties.

“Jeremie is not in a good situation,” Slot remarked. “What I mean by that is he will definitely not play tomorrow or next week. [A] hamstring injury, so it will take some time.”

Wataru Endo returned from an injury on Wednesday to sit on the bench, with Giovanni Leoni being the only other known absentee for Liverpool at this time as he recovers from surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

£116m signing Florian Wirtz will be eager to maintain his position in the team and ignite his relatively quiet Liverpool career thus far.

Predicted Liverpool XI (4-2-3-1): Mamardashvili; Bradley, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Mac Allister, Jones; Salah, Szoboszlai, Gakpo; Ekitike

Injured: Frimpong, Alisson, Leoni

Doubts: Isak, Gravenberch
