Liverpool vs Man United referee analysis: Three critical errors made by Michael Oliver.

Three critical errors made by Michael Oliver, poor officiating impacted Liverpool.

The rivalry between Liverpool and Man United was once again heightened by several controversial calls from referee Michael Oliver.

Bryan Mbeumo’s goal in the first minute provided Man United with an early advantage at Anfield, marking the first time the Red Devils achieved back-to-back wins under Ruben Amorim.

Harry Maguire scored a late winner after Cody Gakpo had equalized for the home side in the second half.

With this significant win, Man United moved within two points of Liverpool in the Premier League standings, a crucial result for the beleaguered manager Amorim.

Play should have been halted for Alexis Mac Allister’s head injury.

Before Mbeumo found the net, the Man United forward collided with Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister in midfield.

Mac Allister fell to the ground with a noticeable head injury, which Oliver claimed he did not observe, thus failing to stop the match as required by the rules.

The assistant referee and the fourth official should have intervened to inform Oliver that the game needed to be paused due to the head injury.

Mbeumo was a Man United player capable of causing problems for Liverpool, and this was evident, albeit under contentious circumstances.

Amad Diallo’s penalty incident.

Amad Diallo might have been lucky to escape a handball call in the penalty area during the first half.

Gakpo’s cross did make contact with Diallo’s arm, but VAR determined it was in a natural position, so no on-field review took place.

However, Diallo did turn his body to obstruct the cross with his arm, and had Oliver reviewed the incident, he would have faced a decision.

Yellow card for Diallo’s challenge.

Diallo was subsequently unfortunate to receive a yellow card in the second half after he clearly won the ball with an excellent sliding tackle.

His follow-through inadvertently caught Gakpo on the foot, but there was no alternative position for Diallo’s foot to land.

The challenge resulted in the first yellow card of the match for Diallo, who committed his third foul of the game. It seems that Oliver issued the caution to the wing-back as part of a cumulative process.

Nonetheless, this decision was quite severe and possibly compelled Amorim to replace Diallo with 30 minutes left in the match.

Last year, Diallo was granted a new contract with Man United, and he has demonstrated his significance within Amorim’s system.
