The Premier League has issued a statement explaining why Liverpool did not receive a penalty for the handball by Amad during their match against Manchester United.

A contentious incident occurred in the first half as Manchester United faced Liverpool FC in the Premier League.

The Premier League has clarified the reasons behind the decision not to award Liverpool a penalty in the first half of their encounter with Manchester United.

Liverpool welcomed United to Anfield on Sunday afternoon, marking their return after the October international break.

The home team entered the match following a three-game losing streak, while United had not achieved back-to-back victories.

United started the match strongly, with Bryan Mbeumo scoring just a minute in, thanks to impressive build-up play from Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo.

Liverpool quickly responded, hitting the post through Cody Gakpo, but their strong appeal for a penalty was dismissed by referee Michael Oliver.

Gakpo sprinted down the left flank and delivered a cross that seemed to strike the arm of United wing-back Amad.

Referee Oliver allowed play to continue, and the incident was subsequently reviewed by the Video Assistant Referee, who concurred with the on-field decision.

They concluded that while the ball did make contact with the United player’s arm, it was in a natural position, thus no foul was committed.

An official statement from the Premier League during the match stated: “The referee’s decision of no penalty was reviewed and upheld by VAR – it was determined that Amad’s arm was in a natural and justifiable position.”
