PSV 1-7 Arsenal Stats: Gunners Excel in Eindhoven with a Seven-Goal Win

Mikel Arteta’s squad enjoyed a comfortable victory as they overwhelmed their Dutch opponents in Eindhoven on Tuesday.

Arsenal is nearly assured of a place in the Champions League quarter-finals after a commanding 7-1 win over PSV.

The Gunners made light work of their Dutch rivals in the first leg of the last-16 matchup, conceding only a penalty goal late in the first half.

PSV initially threatened when they hit the crossbar during a counterattack, but Arsenal quickly responded, maneuvering the ball into the box for Declan Rice to lob it toward the back post, where Jurrien Timber was ideally positioned to head it in from close range.

Before long, Arsenal extended their lead to 2-0, with a clever team play culminating in a dangerous cross from Myles Lewis-Skelly that Ethan Nwaneri finished with a powerful strike.

The third goal came as a gift. PSV seemed to have halted an attack, but Ryan Flamingo unexpectedly fell, allowing Mikel Merino to seize the opportunity and slot it past goalkeeper Walter Benitez.

PSV found a glimmer of hope when Thomas Partey fouled Luuk de Jong in the box, leading to Noa Lang’s successful penalty conversion.

However, just after the second half commenced, Nwaneri’s low cross caught Benitez off guard, and Odegaard was on hand to capitalize, making it 4-1.

In a matter of seconds, Arsenal netted their fifth goal, with substitute Riccardo Calafiori setting up Leandro Trossard for an easy finish.

Odegaard then received a pass from Merino, surged forward, and scored. In the final moments, Calafiori added another with a striker’s finish following a superb assist from Odegaard.

Despite the criticism directed at Arsenal for not acquiring a striker, they have made history as the first team to score seven or more away goals in a Champions League knockout match.
