Howard Webb is expected to meet with Arne Slot following the Liverpool manager’s actions against Crystal Palace, according to former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee Keith Hackett.

He shared with Football Insider that such a meeting could foster a better relationship between the two parties.

Liverpool experienced a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday, September 27, with Eddie Nketiah scoring in the seventh minute of stoppage time, igniting excitement at Selhurst Park.

Despite losing Eberechi Eze during the summer, Crystal Palace dominated the match, taking the lead within nine minutes, although Federico Chiesa later equalized.

Arne Slot was visibly upset by the opening goal at Selhurst Park. Ismaila Sarr’s goal led to Slot receiving an early yellow card, as he believed a goal-kick should have been awarded instead of the corner from which Palace scored.

Liverpool was fortunate that their goal was allowed to stand, with Mohamed Salah being accused of handling the ball before Chiesa scored at the back post, yet the manager remained furious.

Slot continued to voice his frustrations in post-match interviews, criticizing referee Chris Kavanagh, prompting calls for Webb to intervene and ease the tensions.

This is not the first instance of Slot encountering problems with Premier League referees, having been sent off during the Merseyside derby last season. However, Hackett is optimistic that a common understanding can be reached between the two.

In an exclusive statement to Football Insider, the former PGMOL chief remarked, “Receiving a yellow card in the ninth minute is detrimental to the game, whether it concerns the manager or players on the field.

We must acknowledge that managers are under significant pressure to secure victories.

“The environment is highly pressurized, similar to the situation faced by the referee.

Where has the cautionary advice disappeared to? This could simply be a discussion between Slot and the fourth official.

If I were Howard Webb, I would reach out to Mr. Slot this morning to discuss the possibility of a visit later in the week.

What would we discuss? Let’s explore ways to enhance the relationship between you and my match officials.

Some referees may exhibit excessive aggression, while others may be too lenient. Communication is key in preventing issues, making it a crucial responsibility for Howard Webb.

I would prefer to visit Melwood [Training Ground] in person rather than just making a phone call. A face-to-face meeting fosters greater mutual respect.”
