Liverpool and Crystal Palace are on the verge of finalizing a deal for Marc Guehi, but one factor could still derail the transfer.

‘What I’m hearing’: Fabrizio Romano discusses the likelihood of Crystal Palace accepting Liverpool’s bid for Marc Guehi at this moment.

Liverpool is determined to enhance their squad with two significant signings before the transfer deadline on Monday.

This summer, the Reds have successfully acquired five key first-team players, showcasing both quality and depth.

However, after offloading several players, Liverpool must take further action to avoid being left with a depleted squad.

The primary focus is on securing a centre-back and a centre-forward, with Marc Guehi and Alexander Isak identified as the main targets. If they cannot secure Guehi and Isak, it is probable that they will not sign anyone.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano provided an update on Isak on Sunday, indicating that Liverpool remains optimistic about acquiring their new No. 9.

Romano also commented on the Guehi situation, stating that there is now only one obstacle that could prevent the England international from joining Liverpool.

Liverpool and Crystal Palace are set to agree on a price for Marc Guehi.

Liverpool submitted a £35 million bid for Guehi on Saturday evening, with Palace reportedly countering with a request for £35 million plus £5 million in add-ons.

So far, there has been no update on Liverpool’s response. However, during a late-night YouTube session on Saturday, Romano mentioned that the financial aspect should not pose any issues.

“The bid for Marc Guehi is in place, £35 million plus a 10 percent sell-on clause,” he stated. “Reaching an agreement with Palace should not be a problem. From what I’m hearing, Liverpool and Palace will come to an agreement for Guehi.

“There are no issues between the clubs, and there are no issues from the player’s side; he has agreed to the terms. Do not believe reports suggesting otherwise. The contract is prepared, and the player is ready to travel and sign.”

While this news appears promising for Liverpool, Romano cautions that the deal could still fall through if Palace fails to secure a suitable replacement for their captain.

“This agreement hinges on Palace,” he asserts. “They need to make an internal decision. The chairman, Steve Parish, has received the figures from Liverpool for a player whose contract expires next year and who is not renewing it. So, on one hand, you can retain your player, keep your captain, and risk losing him for free next season. On the other hand, he has the financial offer from Liverpool, so you could accept the offer and seek a replacement.

“Therefore, the key question is whether Palace can identify the right replacement; if they do and give the go-ahead, Guehi will travel. If he doesn’t head to Liverpool today, they will be prepared for 2026. If Palace makes the call, the deal will be finalized without delay.”

Marc Guehi is set to play for Crystal Palace. When he addressed the media on Friday, Oliver Glasner seemed to dismiss the possibility of Guehi’s departure, highlighting the challenges of finding a suitable replacement.

While this may not bode well for Liverpool, it is evidently vital for Palace to secure a new centre-back.

In the midst of all this, the Eagles, similar to Liverpool, are scheduled to compete on Sunday, taking on Aston Villa in the late match of the day.

According to a report from The Times on Saturday, Guehi is presently ‘expected to participate.’ If the 25-year-old does not show up for the match, it will strongly indicate that Liverpool is on the verge of acquiring him.

It is now a critical moment for Guehi, Isak, and Liverpool. The outcome of whether the Reds secure one, two, or none of their significant targets could influence their entire season.
