Virgil van Dijk highlights Liverpool teammate after ‘disappointing’ draw with Aston Villa.
Following the ‘disappointing’ draw with Aston Villa, Virgil van Dijk directs attention to a Liverpool teammate.
Virgil van Dijk expressed frustration over a critical missed chance by striker Darwin Nunez as Liverpool settled for a 2-2 draw at Villa Park this evening.
The Liverpool captain acknowledged that the team allowed Aston Villa to escape with a draw, despite a commendable second-half effort that ultimately fell short.
Van Dijk specifically referenced Nunez’s glaring miss from close range, reflecting on a hard-fought point in a dynamic match at Villa Park.
Nunez inexplicably sent the ball over the bar from just six yards out, evoking memories of Ronnie Rosenthal’s notorious miss in a similar fixture over three decades ago.
Liverpool initially took the lead when Mo Salah scored around the half-hour mark, but Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins turned the tide before halftime, putting Unai Emery’s side in front.
A deflected effort from Trent Alexander-Arnold brought the score level, yet Nunez’s inconsistent finishing was evident as the visitors pushed for a winning goal.
Van Dijk commented: “We feel a bit disappointed, but we fought hard. We had opportunities to secure the win and took some risks towards the end, which made the game more open at times.
“In terms of possession, we performed well and created good chances for a second goal. It’s frustrating to concede from a set-piece. We gave it our all, but it wasn’t enough for three points.
“We should have made it 3-2, but credit to Aston Villa for making it challenging. We have another tough match this weekend, followed by Newcastle, so our immediate focus is on Man City, which will be a difficult encounter.
“We have done everything possible to win games, and our concentration will be on that for Sunday.”
Aston Villa forward Watkins indicated that his manager, Unai Emery, would likely be pleased with a draw against a team he has not yet managed to overcome since his arrival at Villa Park, according to the Mirror.
He stated, “It was a challenging match. They are at the top of the league for a reason. We have a solid home record and consistently make it difficult for opposing teams.
“Despite falling behind, we responded well and nearly secured a win at the end.”
“Unai Emery has high expectations for us, and our recent performances haven’t met those standards, so he will appreciate this result.”
