Should Liverpool have had at least one penalty?

In the Premier League match between Brentford and Liverpool on October 17, 2026 (won 2–1 by Liverpool), referee John Brooks and VAR (Darren England) were at the center of major first-half controversy involving an overturned penalty and a red card review.

Key Referee and VAR Incidents

Overturned Liverpool Penalty (41st Minute):

Referee John Brooks initially pointed to the penalty spot when Alexis Mac Allister went down inside the box under pressure from Dango Ouattara.

Following a VAR review, Brooks was sent to the pitchside monitor. Replays showed Ouattara clearly won and played the ball before any contact with Mac Allister.

The penalty decision was overturned to no penalty. The Premier League Match Centre confirmed: “He plays the ball. Red No.11 clearly wins the ball.”

Brentford Red Card / Violent Conduct Review (Stoppage Time, First Half):

Just before halftime, an off-the-ball clash occurred between Brentford’s Yehor Yarmolyuk and Liverpool’s Jérémy Jacquet.

After another VAR review at the pitchside monitor, Yarmolyuk was shown a straight red card for violent conduct (headbutting/clashing with Jacquet), reducing Brentford to 10 men (and later 9 men in the second half after Vitaly Janelt’s second yellow card).

Unpunished First-Half Appeals:

Earlier in the half (around the 39th minute), Florian Wirtz went down in the box under a challenge from Yarmolyuk with both hands wrapped around him, which was waved away by the referee and VAR without a spot-kick awarded.
