Newcastle United is on the brink of finalizing a signing after Sunderland’s failed pursuit.

The club has made significant progress in acquiring Victor Muñoz from CA Osasuna, following Sunderland’s unsuccessful attempts to secure him months ago.

During the winter transfer window, Sunderland expressed strong interest and submitted several bids for the player.

However, the transfer did not materialize, and Newcastle United is now poised to bring the winger to the Premier League this summer.

Earlier today, Sport Witness reported from Spain that the Magpies are currently leading the competition to sign the Spanish international. The La Liga club has stated that no official bid has been submitted yet.

Newcastle is nearing a deal after Sunderland’s snub.

The latest edition of AS highlights the Black Cats’ unsuccessful January bid while discussing the current situation regarding the Tyneside club.

Eddie Howe’s team is closing in on an agreement for Victor Muñoz, with a proposed fee of €35m plus €5m in bonuses, totaling €40m, which aligns with his release clause.

However, AS notes that the new structure offers more favorable tax implications, as directly paying the clause is less beneficial.

The winger’s former club, Real Madrid, holds 50% of his rights and has a buyback option. His transfer to St. James’ Park now hinges on the final decision from the Spanish giants.

Diario de Navarra reports that the move to Newcastle United has gained momentum in the last few hours.

CA Osasuna has received a verbal offer of €30m, although AS mentions €35m plus bonuses. While this is below his €40m clause, discussions are advancing.

Muñoz joined Niagara Sports Company in April, and the agency is currently managing the negotiations.

He has expressed his approval for the English club after receiving a ‘very attractive offer.’ The player’s position has shifted since he turned down Sunderland in January to remain with the La Liga team.

Awaiting Real Madrid’s decision.

CA Osasuna anticipates that the Magpies will submit a formal offer soon.

At that point, the club will need to present this to Real Madrid, who must decide whether to activate the buyback clause.

If Los Blancos choose not to activate this clause, he will be able to join Newcastle United.

The newspaper reports: ‘The negotiations encompass critical elements such as the distribution of the player’s transfer fee, which is currently split evenly between Osasuna and Real Madrid, along with the percentages of revenue from future sales—important details considering the player’s immense potential. These are pivotal hours to settle the issue…’

Contract, valuation, and statistics

Victor Muñoz concluded this season with seven goals and five assists across 36 matches.

With a contract lasting until 2030, Transfermarkt values him at €30m.

Newcastle United is looking to sign him as a replacement for Anthony Gordon, who transferred to Barcelona in May.
