This weekend, a new yet recognizable name has emerged in connection with a potential transfer to Newcastle United: AC Milan forward Christopher Nkunku.

Having joined Milan last summer from Chelsea, Nkunku’s tenure appears to be short-lived. New manager Ruben Amorim does not envision him fitting into his plans, alongside Fikayo Tomori, another player previously associated with Newcastle.

As Nkunku approaches his 29th birthday later this year, Newcastle is in search of experience and a natural No.10, prompting speculation that this latest connection may have substance.

Nkunku back on Newcastle’s radar?

According to Italian journalist Matteo Moretto, Newcastle United is expressing interest in a last-minute deal for AC Milan’s Christopher Nkunku.

He reports that the French player is expected to depart from the San Siro in the closing weeks of the transfer window, attracting interest from Borussia Dortmund, his former club RB Leipzig, Newcastle, and several unnamed clubs in Spain.

Throughout his career, Nkunku has occupied various attacking positions. At AC Milan, he was utilized as a center-forward, but he has also played on the wing and in the No.10 position. During his final season at Chelsea, he made 48 appearances, scoring 15 goals and providing five assists.

However, it is his last season at Leipzig that truly stands out. He primarily played as a second striker, featuring 21 times, scoring 15 goals, and assisting seven from that No.10 role. His performance the previous season was equally remarkable; across 52 matches, he contributed an impressive 35 goals and 20 assists.

Unfortunately, he has not replicated that form since. This decline could be attributed to the system he has played in, the quality of the leagues, or a series of injuries he has faced. As he approaches his 29th birthday, Christopher Nkunku likely has one more significant move ahead of him, and if Milan is willing to let him go, Newcastle could seize the opportunity.

Two years too late?

Christopher Nkunku has experienced some outstanding seasons throughout his career, but at 28, soon to be 29, he should be reaching his peak.

Currently, he is facing challenges in Serie A following a lackluster period at Chelsea and seemed poised to transfer again after being unable to match his impressive performance at RB Leipzig.

The transfer fee and salary are expected to be substantial, yet this could be an opportunity that Jaissle might pursue, as he is familiar with the player’s achievements in the Bundesliga and his ability to enhance the second striker position.
