Sunderland is reportedly facing competition for Almería striker Luis Javier Suárez, based on the latest information coming from Europe this weekend.

Interest in the Colombian international striker is said to be growing, with new reports connecting Liverpool, Sporting CP, and other prominent European clubs to a potential move for the 27-year-old, who has also been associated with Sunderland following their promotion to the Premier League.

Suárez, who scored 31 goals in 43 matches across all competitions last season, is among the most sought-after forwards in the market this summer. Last week, reports indicated that Sunderland had submitted an offer for the player.

However, according to fresh claims from the Portuguese publication A Bola, his transfer status remains uncertain as Sporting CP awaits a decision on whether Viktor Gyökeres will leave the Estádio José Alvalade.

Should the Swedish striker depart, Sporting is prepared to act quickly, with Suárez being their primary target for replacement.

The report further mentions that Manchester United, Juventus, Atlético Madrid, and Liverpool are all keeping an eye on the situation, with Sunderland included among the interested clubs.

Despite this, A Bola asserts that only Sporting has made a formal approach thus far.

This contradicts recent statements from Spanish journalist Jose Gomez Perez, who disclosed that Sunderland had made an official bid exceeding Almería’s internal valuation, although the La Liga club is still aiming for approximately €25million (£21.1million).

Sporting, on their end, reportedly view that price as too high at this moment.

Suárez is thought to be carefully considering all available options. The forward is eager to participate in the Champions League, which could provide clubs like Sporting and Liverpool with a competitive advantage in negotiations.

Nevertheless, sources close to the matter assert that Sunderland has not been officially rejected, as a so-called ‘gentleman’s agreement’ between the player and the club may allow for some flexibility in the decision-making process.

The striker’s resume certainly supports the considerable interest. Suárez has earned five senior caps for Colombia and has had successful tenures in Spain with Granada and Almería, along with a brief period at Marseille in Ligue 1.

His tally of 33 goals over the last two La Liga seasons places him among the most prolific South American strikers currently playing outside the traditional elite leagues.
