Liverpool has learned the challenges they must overcome to reach the Champions League final in Munich this May.
Having topped the revamped opening stage of the Champions League, Liverpool’s reward is a thrilling Round of 16 encounter against Paris Saint-Germain. The draw, held in Nyon on Friday morning, paired the Reds with the French champions, who are currently leading their league.
The first leg is scheduled to take place in Paris on either March 4 or March 5, with the return leg at Anfield the following week.
While Arne Slot’s team secured seven victories out of eight to top their league stage, PSG had to rally from a two-goal deficit to defeat Manchester City at home and clinch a win at Stuttgart on the final matchday to secure their place in the knockout rounds.
The French team then dominated their compatriots Brest, winning 10-0 on aggregate—3-0 away and a resounding 7-0 at home on Wednesday night—to advance to the last 16.
Liverpool has previously faced PSG twice in European competitions. They were eliminated 3-2 on aggregate in the European Cup Winners’ Cup semi-final in 1997, but in the 2018/19 season, they triumphed 3-2 at Anfield and lost 2-1 in France during the Champions League group stage on their way to winning the title.
In the remaining matches of the draw, title contenders Arsenal will compete against PSV Eindhoven, while fellow Premier League team Aston Villa will face Bruges.
Both teams finished in the top eight during the league stage, and their second leg will be played at home.
In other matchups, Benfica will take on Barcelona, Real Madrid will go up against Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund will face Lille, Bayern Munich will play Bayer Leverkusen, and Feyenoord will meet Inter Milan.
Liverpool has been placed in the silver half of the draw, revealing their potential path to the final in Munich on May 31.
If they succeed against PSG, they will then encounter the winner of the Bruges versus Aston Villa match in the quarter-finals, with the second leg played away.
In the semi-finals, they could face one of Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, PSV, or Arsenal, with the second leg at home.
This arrangement means that all Premier League clubs are positioned on the same side of the draw.
