Liverpool aims to intercept Arsenal’s transfer as negotiations stall: report

Liverpool considers taking over a £60m transfer that Arsenal is pursuing after a request from Andoni Iraola.

Liverpool is attempting to disrupt Arsenal’s upcoming transfer plans.

The Gunners have secured a deal for Bruno Guimaraes, and their ambitious chase for Vinicius Jr has concluded, prompting them to seek a new defender, with Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa being a top target.

However, with Liverpool also in need of defensive reinforcements, the Reds could deliver another setback to the Premier League champions behind the scenes.

Liverpool is contemplating a move for Ezri Konsa, despite Arsenal’s interest.

As reported by The Guardian, Konsa has now caught the attention of the Reds, as Andoni Iraola searches for a partner for Virgil van Dijk in defense.

With Ibrahima Konate’s departure to Real Madrid and Van Dijk now at 35 years old, there is an urgent need to bolster defensive depth, particularly considering the inexperience of both Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni, who are recovering from injuries.

So far this summer, Jacquet and Victor Munoz are the only two new additions to Anfield, and Andoni Iraola’s lack of depth was underscored when his assistant, former Bournemouth captain Tommy Elphick, had to step in as a center-back during a recent training session.

Konsa also offers the advantage of being able to play as a right-back, a position that has posed challenges for both Arsenal and Liverpool.

FourFourTwo reports that the North London club has been actively exploring various options in the transfer market, but they have hesitated to meet the £60 million asking price while pursuing players like Vinicius Jr and Bruno Guimaraes.

Interest from Mikel Arteta’s childhood friend Iraola may motivate the Gunners to finalize the deal, especially with Ben White and Jurrien Timber both sidelined due to injuries that will keep them out of the World Cup.

Additionally, with uncertainties surrounding William Saliba’s fitness, Konsa could provide valuable coverage in that area.

Iraola recently acknowledged, “In terms of defensive depth, we are quite thin at the moment, particularly with the centre-back and right-back situation.”

Additionally, Joe Gomez will also be sidelined at the beginning of the season due to an injury.

According to Transfermarkt, Konsa is valued at €45 million. Liverpool is set to face Newcastle United on the opening weekend of the new season.
