On Saturday night, Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah took to social media to voice his dissatisfaction with the current trajectory of the club.
The winger stated: “I want to see Liverpool return to being the heavy metal attacking team that instills fear in opponents and a team that consistently wins trophies.” He further remarked: “That is the style of football I am accustomed to, and it is the identity that must be reclaimed and maintained permanently. It cannot be up for negotiation, and everyone who joins this club should adapt to it.”
These remarks indicate that the Egyptian international is displeased with the playing style that has been implemented by Arne Slot during his tenure.
Liverpool secured the Premier League title last season under the Dutch manager, and Salah had no complaints at that time, but the current season has not unfolded as expected.
Reasons why Arne Slot’s playing style is not compatible with Liverpool
While it is important not to entirely undermine Slot, who accomplished significant achievements last season, the Reds clinched the league title largely due to Salah’s remarkable season, where he netted 29 goals and provided 18 assists.
The Egyptian superstar propelled the team to the championship with his exceptional individual performances, and the current struggles of the team without him at peak form have highlighted Slot’s tactical shortcomings.
Liverpool boasts the second-highest average possession (59.2%) in the Premier League this season, yet they rank sixth in the league for expected goals (xG) and ‘big chances’ created.
This essentially indicates that the Reds are squandering a significant amount of possession, passing without purpose, resulting in numerous uninspiring matches where Slot’s team holds the ball but fails to create meaningful opportunities.
A noticeable lack of inherent creativity has been a persistent problem throughout the season, especially without the Egyptian’s unique ability to conjure moments of brilliance from seemingly nothing on a regular basis.
This is the reason the Dutchman’s approach does not resonate with the Anfield audience, who, like Salah, prefer attacking football, which is why Slot should be replaced this summer.
Liverpool ought to find a replacement for Slot with a manager who has a track record of winning titles.
There is a head coach currently without a job who might be perfectly aligned with Liverpool’s needs, and even though Salah is departing the club this summer, he would welcome this appointment.
Former Barcelona manager Xavi is now a free agent and could be an intriguing choice for the Reds. Although there have been no links to him, this move could be beneficial for all involved.
The Spaniard, known for his 4-3-3 formation, has a proven history as both a player and manager of securing trophies and delivering the attractive style of play that fans desire.
Xavi has clinched a league title every other season throughout his managerial career, achieving three titles in six seasons, along with six domestic cups.
During the 2022/23 LaLiga season, Barcelona, under his leadership, led the league in possession (68.8%), expected goals (84.5), shots on target per game (6.8), ‘big chances’ created (155), and touches in the opponent’s box (1,296).
These statistics indicate that Xavi, who emphasizes the significance of positioning in his system, is capable of coaching a team that consistently attacks and dominates its rivals, generating chances and thrilling fans.
Arsenal and Premier League icon Thierry Henry even remarked that Xavi is “up there with Pep (Guardiola)” regarding his football intellect and ability to motivate players.
This further implies that Xavi could be an excellent choice for the current circumstances at Anfield, as Salah’s post, which received likes from several first-team players, indicates that not all squad members are inspired by Slot’s style of play.
If the Spaniard can motivate a group of players, as Henry suggested, he might be the ideal candidate to come in and reignite the passion at Liverpool, enabling them to progress next season.
The LaLiga champion possesses an engaging attacking style of play that captivates supporters, along with a reputation and character that can motivate a team of players. This indicates that he embodies all the qualities Liverpool should seek in a manager.
Consequently, the club needs to sever ties with Slot and pursue the appointment of the 4-3-3 manager as their new head coach in preparation for the 2026/27 season.
