Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Liverpool made a discreet inquiry regarding an £85m target.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool has reached out secretly about a potential £85m Premier League midfielder, but competition from Manchester United could jeopardize the transfer.

Liverpool has intensified its search for a new midfielder, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano verifying that the club has initiated contact regarding one of the most sought-after talents in the Premier League.

It is well-known that Anfield is actively seeking midfield reinforcements this summer, possibly even more than one, depending on player departures. With speculation surrounding Curtis Jones’ future and surprising links to Alexis Mac Allister potentially leaving, Liverpool finds itself in need of additional depth.

However, even if both players remain, acquiring a defense-oriented midfield anchor is crucial. Currently, Wataru Endo is the only dedicated No. 6 in the squad, and his long-term status is uncertain.

Liverpool’s recruitment team appears to be on the same page. Following earlier reports this month that the Reds had shown interest in West Ham United’s Matheus Fernandes, Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed on his YouTube channel that Liverpool indeed made contact at the end of May.

In a conversation with Born ‘N Red, Romano shared some insider information:

“I will reveal something that hasn’t been widely reported in recent days and weeks. Liverpool made a call two weeks ago to assess the situation regarding Fernandes at West Ham, to gauge the price and terms, but they have not followed up with any bid or formal discussions.

“However, they did make that call two weeks ago, and I can assure you of that. Tottenham and Manchester United are also pursuing a deal, so there are numerous clubs involved. The player is expected to be costly, exceeding £85m. This indicates that Liverpool is actively exploring options for midfielders.”

While Fernandes is an excellent defensive midfielder, the financial implications of the deal may hinder a transfer to Anfield.

With Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur showing significant interest, West Ham’s asking price has surged to an astonishing level.

For a player who has experienced consecutive relegations from the Premier League, the commitment from the Liverpool management is significantly less than what might be expected. What was once seen as a potentially economical acquisition has rapidly transformed into a highly costly transfer.

Liverpool’s reluctance is also influenced by their tactical and financial priorities. Currently, the club’s main objective is to secure a new winger, with Yan Diomande still prominently featured on their wishlist. Until this primary target is addressed, it is difficult to envision FSG approving a substantial expenditure on a midfielder.

With Fernandes likely moving to another club as the competition intensifies, Liverpool supporters are hoping that the recruitment team can discover a more budget-friendly option. One thing is clear: Romano’s update indicates that the Reds are diligently working behind the scenes to identify that essential midfield protector.
