Arsenal is on the brink of securing their first summer signing as the coveted addition for Arteta ‘jets in’ to finalize his contract.

The Gunners are just days away from making their first acquisition of the 2025 summer transfer window, with Martin Zubimendi arriving in London to sign his contract – and three more significant signings are expected to follow swiftly.

After finishing as Premier League runners-up for the third consecutive season, Arsenal is eager to enhance their squad this summer. While Mikel Arteta deserves recognition for establishing Arsenal as regulars in the Champions League, the push to transform them into trophy contenders will intensify this summer.

Although progress has been slow at the Emirates Stadium, the newly appointed sporting director, Andrea Berta, has been diligently working on several key signings.

Berta’s first major move for the north London club will be to finally secure Arteta’s long-term target, Zubimendi, whom he has pursued for several years.

The journey to acquire the 19-times capped Spain midfielder has been challenging. Last summer, Liverpool nearly signed him, but a last-minute change of heart led him to withdraw from the agreement.

Despite reports suggesting that the Gunners had reached an agreement as early as January, they have had to endure anxiety due to ongoing rumors of a transfer hijack by Real Madrid.

However, with Fabrizio Romano confirming last week that Zubimendi’s transfer to Arsenal is imminent, Sky Sports has reported that the 26-year-old has arrived in London to finalize his contract and complete his long-anticipated move to the Gunners.

Arsenal is believed to be paying Real Sociedad a fee slightly exceeding his €60 million (£51m / $69m) release clause to allow for some payments to be scheduled later.

He is also expected to sign an initial four-year contract at the Emirates Stadium, securing the 26-year-old star’s services until the summer of 2029.

Zubimendi is expected to seamlessly integrate into the Arsenal midfield and is likely seen as a successor to Thomas Partey, who appears set to depart as a free agent after negotiations for an extension have yet to yield a consensus.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Sociedad’s vice-president Roberto Montiel elaborated on the type of player Arsenal supporters can anticipate next season, drawing parallels between Zubimendi and former Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich star, Xabi Alonso.

“He was adept with both feet, a quick thinker, and consistently positioned himself well on the field,” Montiel stated. “He resembled Xabi Alonso in his understanding of the game.”

For the Gunners, while the acquisition of Zubimendi will undoubtedly bring considerable joy, it will not signify the conclusion of their summer activities.

Moreover, the Gunners are eager to finalize a new striker as well, with Berta actively pursuing potential agreements for either Viktor Gyokeres or Benjamin Sesko.

The Arsenal executive has engaged in advanced discussions regarding both players, but it seems that Sporting CP’s asking price for Gyokeres exceeds Arsenal’s budget, leading them to prioritize Sesko, with whom they have reportedly reached an agreement.

Additionally, Arteta aims to bolster his left-wing options, and an ambitious pursuit of Real Madrid star Rodrygo is also on their agenda.
