As Xabi Alonso’s decision is anticipated, Arne Slot was informed that “time is up” at Liverpool.

Arne Slot is under a lot of pressure after a terrible Liverpool season. After overseeing a poor season, Arne Slot has been advised that his tenure as manager of Liverpool should come to an end.

The Dutchman guided Liverpool to the league title the previous season, but the 2025–2026 campaign hasn’t been nearly as successful, and there have been rumors that Xabi Alonso would take his job.

Slot was jeered off the Anfield field after Saturday’s draw with Chelsea, and Liverpool still has to do more to secure a Champions League position for the upcoming campaign.

“I think Slot’s time is probably up. The main reason for saying this is not a dislike of him. I think he’s a good guy and a very bright coach, but the reality is Liverpool’s fanbase is as powerful as any out there, for all sorts of reasons.

I think we are looking at an inevitable departure whether it is now or a few months into the season,” stated former Anfield star Danny Murphy in an interview with BBC Sport, suggesting that Slot is a dead man walking now that things have turned sour on Merseyside.

Former Anfield star Danny Murphy said in an interview with BBC Sport that Slot is a dead man walking because the fans have turned against him. “I think Slot’s time is probably up,” he stated. “This is not primarily because I don’t like him.

Although I believe he is a kind man and a very intelligent coach, the truth is that Liverpool’s supporters are as strong as any in the world for a variety of reasons.

Whether it happens now or a few months into the season, I believe a departure is imminent.

In the meantime, Alonso is being courted by Chelsea, who are also looking for a new manager after Liam Rosenior was fired. It has been suggested that Alonso would be open to taking over at Stamford Bridge, but he must quickly decide whether he wants the job or would prefer to wait for a vacancy at Liverpool.

For a while, it had appeared that Alonso would be the natural heir to Slot’s reign given the connection he already has with the Liverpool supporters.

However, the noise coming out of the Liverpool boardroom seems doubtful. But the atmosphere emanating from the Liverpool boardroom seems to be one of uncertainty, with rumors that they would go against the desires of their supporters and retain Slot for the upcoming campaign.
