Chelsea have been linked with Wirtz. Would you still take him at Chelsea

Wirtz carries a Transfermarkt market value of €85m, the figure Chelsea would have to clear against a 2026-27 wage bill of £184.6m.

Wirtz earns £250,000 a week at Liverpool, already close to Morgan Rogers’ £280,000 as Chelsea’s highest earner.

UEFA have flagged Chelsea for breaching Financial Fair Play’s Squad Cost Ratio limit.

Wirtz signed a five-year Liverpool contract in July 2025 that runs to 30 June 2030.

That £85m figure is not a confirmed fee, since nobody has reported an actual bid, so it understates how much Chelsea would really have to find for a player Liverpool paid £116m for just last year.

A wage package close to Morgan Rogers’ suggests the money itself would not be the sticking point, which pushes the real obstacle elsewhere in this deal.

That obstacle is Chelsea’s own books, already under UEFA scrutiny, at a time when the Blues would also be funding a reported move for Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde.

With four years still on his Liverpool contract, Wirtz offers the Reds no reason to accept a discount even if they wanted to sell.

Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers both play as Chelsea’s attacking midfielder this season.

Estevao gives Xabi Alonso a further option in the same areas of the pitch.

Wirtz turns 24 in May 2027, fitting the age profile of Chelsea’s recent recruitment under BlueCo.

Chelsea already have a Rogers-Palmer axis occupying the exact zone of the pitch Wirtz operates in, so this would be an upgrade fight rather than filling a gap.

Estevao adds a third body to that queue, meaning any Wirtz deal would need a plan for who makes way, not just a cheque.

Where Wirtz does fit is the profile Chelsea have built their whole rebuild around, a gifted young international with his best years still ahead.

Wirtz worked under Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen, winning the Bundesliga together in 2024.

Wirtz made 33 Premier League appearances for Liverpool in 2025-26, scoring five goals and providing three assists.

Fabrizio Romano said in June 2026 there was “nothing official, no talks” between Chelsea and Wirtz.

The Alonso relationship is the one genuine pull factor in this entire rumour, built on a title won together rather than an agent’s briefing.

But Wirtz is already a regular starter at Liverpool, so a move to Chelsea would mean fighting Palmer and Rogers for exactly the same minutes he already has.

Romano’s denial matters here too, since it suggests the relationship has not yet translated into anything the player himself is pushing for.

Liverpool are tracking Manchester City’s Rayan Cherki, a player they first scouted before his £34m move to City in June 2025.

Jamie Carragher said in October 2026 that Wirtz’s performances showed “simply nothing there.”

Wirtz produced five goals and three assists in 2,388 Premier League minutes last season.

Interest in Cherki only becomes relevant if Manchester City are relegated over their FFP case, which makes it a contingency rather than succession planning.

Carragher’s verdict reflects a wider mood among Liverpool voices that the numbers have not matched the fee, even if the club itself is not acting on that frustration yet.

Five goals and three assists in almost 2,400 minutes is modest enough output to keep that debate alive through the rest of the season.
