JAMIE CARRAGHER DELIVERS SCATHING CRITIQUE OF LIVERPOOL PLAYER FOLLOWING MANCHESTER CITY ROUT – HIS ASSESSMENT GAINS WIDESPREAD ATTENTION

In the aftermath of Liverpool’s 3-0 home loss to Manchester City on October 11, 2026, Jamie Carragher offered a pointed evaluation of individual player performances during his Sky Sports analysis:

Carragher advocates for Liverpool star’s removal from lineup following Man City defeat

Jamie Carragher contends that Florian Wirtz should be excluded from Liverpool’s starting XI following yet another underwhelming display in their 3-0 loss to Manchester City.

The ex-Liverpool defender maintains that the midfielder is failing to contribute sufficiently in possession or without the ball and argues that Liverpool cannot continue to wait for his performance to improve.

“I believe he should be taken out of the squad, I stated this previously and I’m repeating it now,” Carragher remarked on Sky Sports.

“I noted that Liverpool performed adequately for much of today’s match prior to the Ryan Gravenberch dismissal, but they failed to generate a scoring opportunity, revealing Liverpool’s significant challenge this season regarding goal-scoring and chance creation—precisely the attributes Wirtz was acquired to provide.

“He’s providing no defensive contribution and he’s offering nothing in an attacking capacity.”

Carragher clarified that he does not intend for the feedback to become personal in nature, yet maintains that Liverpool are justified in demanding superior performances.

“I don’t wish for anyone to attack the player or criticize him unfairly, but I simply believe we’re entitled to expect more and we cannot afford to delay,” he stated.

“I examined the historical record of players deemed insufficient for Liverpool’s aspirations of winning league titles or European trophies, yet who made meaningful contributions in their respective roles,” Carragher explained.

“Players including Nicky Barmby, Vladimir Smicer, Yossi Benayoun, Maxi Rodriguez, Jari Litmanen, Philippe Coutinho, Steven Gerrard, and Steve McManaman.

“They’ve demonstrated greater value than this player currently demonstrates.”

Carragher concluded by suggesting that Liverpool should consider restructuring their midfield composition to incorporate increased goal-scoring, creative output, and physical presence.

“I believe we’ve reached a point where further delay is no longer feasible,” he stated.

“I’m convinced that the midfield requires restructuring to incorporate goal-scoring ability, playmaking contributions, and to introduce greater athleticism, physical stature, and strength.

“Gravenberch must be included in that lineup.”
