Is the Manchester-born referee biased against Liverpool?

Liverpool suffered their first defeat under Andoni Iraola in their 2026/27 Premier League clash against Man City, losing by a 3-0 margin at Anfield.

The Reds dominated much of the first hour mark or so, but the tides changed when Ryan Gravenberch was sent off after picking up a second yellow card at the 63rd minute mark of the clash.

The sending off has sparked a lot of backlash within Liverpool fans. Many have pointed out at how soft the first yellow card was and how Gravenberch didn’t warrant getting sent off like that.

One Liverpool fan on X, LiverpoolZNE, has now pointed at multiple occasions when referee Chris Kavanagh has cost the club in the last. Kavanagh, of course, is a Manchester-born referee and that has sparked questions over how he gets to officiate these matches.

The fan wrote: “When we say Chris Kavanagh has a history of bias against Liverpool and Iraola this is exactly what we mean: Today, October 11, 2026: Chris Kavanagh issued a controversial second yellow card to Ryan Gravenberch in the 62nd minute for a soft foul on Jérémy Doku. The red card broke the 0-0 deadlock and triggered an immediate Liverpool collapse, resulting in a 3-0 win for Man City.
